I have had my Kirkham going on 5 years and over 13,000 miles, and all I do is windex once every month or two.

Scotch brite once a year as needed

And always get compliments on the finish, I`m too lazy to have a painted car that would require waxing or washing, ha

Now you've opened the door to "stain jokes.":p

I dunno. I thought about a CSX4000 Shelby, but IMVVVVHO there's no such thing. Having various builders put them together for CS badging is bogus.

Buy a Kirkham if you want alloy. Buy an ERA or SPF if you want a solid model at lower cost than real tin. But I think the $20k for the pasted-on Shelby name is wasted. YMMV.

Truer words were never written.

OK, what's YMMV. I haven't seen that before.

Evan's "spidey-sense" is going to go off now. Rah-roh. Really, everyone has their preferences. I'm sure most people would not buy a polished alloy body for numerous reasons, but I love it.

Ernie, I keep my car garaged and covered, although I'm sure my very soft cover causes some minimal harm to the finish. I actually cover it more to ward off the oxidation process, if any, since I live in a mild (not humid) climate, and keep general dirt and dust off.

Maurice makes an interesting point about the BNL series car (Bare Naked Lady). Maybe it's LESS work than having paint! I kind of assumed it was more after seeing that Kirkham in bad need of some serious polishing.

Gunner does raise a worthy point about some of the CSX cars, something I to have pondered. OK, it really is a "Shelby", parts gathered up to HIS specifications and he has some control over who does the build. If a builder isn't doing a good job, he's liable to get his license pulled or his butt kicked or both. But there are cases where the "parts" and "pieces" have been assembled by an individual owner or that owners chosen builder is outside the loop of approved Shelby builders. At one point does the car start to loose it's pedigree?

We DO see Shelby ad's noting it's a "Las Vegas" car, I think that carries some weight. Who the supplier was, who built it, under what circumstances, etc. doesn't seem to carry "that much" weight though, I'm surprised by that. Testimony to the power of the BRAND NAME over and beyond any other factors.

dcdoug, YMMV is netspeak: Your Mileage May Vary. Meaning you might have a totally different, equally valid take on something.

There's an interesting parallel in the news today. Roger Penske was negotiating to pick up Saturn from GM. Last I heard, GM was going to continue to build the cars for the "new" maker until they got their own facilities in place, three or four years down the road. Now Penske has thrown in the towel because some OTHER maker declined to make a deal to build the cars for him. So... exactly what would Penske/Saturn have been, if Penske is just a manager and some hired factory (GM at first, then probably someone like Daewoo or Cherry) builds the cars? Call me really old fashioned, but I think cars are one thing that need to be built by whoever sells them, not shopped out like contract computers.

And, um, that goes double for exotics like "Shelbys." IMHO. YMMV.

I have had my car going on 4 years and I have washed it once. I wax it once a year, and use a California Duster and quicke detailer the rest of the time. It does not get much easier than that. I can quick detail the paint in about 10 minutes. I don't drive it in the rain, but still paint is not tough to take care of.

As I said above, I think painted and BNL Cobras both require maintenance. The amount of maintenance performed is entirely up to the owner. Chips can be repaired and dings can be repaired. It's really only about time and money.

Well, technically the Kirkham bodies come from Poland.

I believe the rumor had it that Renault was going to build the cars for Saturn/Penske.

Excaliber 10-01-2009 03:12 PM

I think the issue with the CSX is about final assembly more than any other issue. Like when AC was builing them, various sources for the parts and a LOT of "in house". In the end, clearly and solidly an AC product. A little fuzzy on some CSX builds in that regard...

Some years ago one of our members had a Kirkham and all though the details remain fuzzy at some point that car was able to secure a CSX number. OK, interesting turn of event's, a car worthy of carrying the name certainly. But it does leave one scratching his head. :) In another case individual parts and pieces were purchased, not always directly through Shelby, and the car was "home built",,, just a bit of a head scratcher.

Will RodKnocks car, at some point in it's life time, come to bear a CSX number? Couldn't rule it out...

Can be big diff. between 4000 shelbys. Just as can be big diff with any E.R.A., superformance , factory five or ? The cars are sum of its parts and who put together . Fit and finish can be all over place. Shelby spent a lot of time on fiberglass body so it would be true shape. Alum bodys furnished by A.C., Kirkham, are very good, I don't like Kemper, Leahy, Kimmins bodys because of shape. Just to flat at top of dash and behind seats, does not bow up as much. Lets face it we all like for our cars to be as close as possible to early cars. We want ford motors even if chevy motors cost less per hp. than ford. Some want Shelby to sign dash . The closer to shelby specs the car is adds value some would say. Some of shelbys dealers were or are better than others. The price of Shelby cars seem to vary more than others, looks like a fair price for alum car.

Where did I put my checkbook? It's here somewhere.

Oh, there it is. OK, now...who do I make it payable to?

Excaliber 10-01-2009 05:07 PM

:) Which illustrates precisely WHY the Kirkhams are in the registry, someone watching like a hawk, now, not so much in the early days.

RodKnock 10-01-2009 05:14 PM

Does my CSX block count for anything?

Do I get a discount or credit if I upgrade my package?
