Actually the article did not say what route they took. That was my guess. It did say they tried as much as possible to stay over land. Would it be closer to fly east from England?

Flying east from London across Europe, Asia and the Indian Ocean to Australia would be around 10000miles.
Flying west from London, across the Atlantic, across continental USA, and then across "the pond" (the Pacific) to Australia would be around 15000 miles....and longer still if you deviated down to South America.
We're talking two resourceful Aussies, not "Wrongway Feldman"
