R34 V.S. Cobra
Hi all, im new here, but the Shelby Cobra is my dream car...someday...anyways, im apart of another automotive message board, and we were having a friendly discussion on what would be better for racing. I know the cobra would kill an R34 in the straights, but what do you guys think as far as road racing goes? Maybe im asking the wrong crowd, since the answers might be a little biased, but I said that the cobra would kill an R34 on straights and turns. But i have never driven one, and i want to get the input of the people who do...Thanks

I think their a "gray market" import and not for sale in the USA as delivered from Japan. I've seen one run the track here in Hawaii. There great, but they CAN be beat. I'd put my money on a well prepped Cobra actually, in the corners OR the straight. My Excalibur couldn't stay with him, and I beat some nice rides over the time I had it!

Im thinkin a cobra would kill an R34, granted the R34 has a TT setup, but even still stock for stock, a cobra would waste an R34.

Are we talking about the same car? The "Skyline" is NOT for sale in the US. I never heard of the Skyline HERE being referred to as a R34. Now wondering what an R34 IS? Wait,,,,or do I really care? LOL

At a light if the cobra hooks up he might take a skyline. (3.8 0-60 some have said). I would say the cobra would lose more then he would win in day to day "meetings". From a roll it would be no race 427 would win. No competition on a track the cobra (big or small blk) would lose to the skyline (evo or sti) the skyline (et all)could carry much more speed into the turns and get on the gas earlier. I'll bring my STi to some east coast gatherings. It maybe a little bit "ricey" but you got to respect the 300hp/300tq 4.6 0-60 (with 4 wheels lighting up at once). I figure it's the most fun under 33k.

Some of the R34's I have seen featured inSuper Street and Sport Compact Car magazines,especially as prepped by the Japanese tuners are some kinda evil beasts.800-1000h.p from the twin turb straight six is not unusual,with650-800 street cars fairly common.Put that through all wheel drive,with modern rubber,and it can't help but hook up!Probably the biggest advantage would be the stealth factor,as most don't know what it is.I believe the engine is similar,if not the same as the 300zx tt of the 90's.The right hand drive,and very low numbers coming through Motorex add a certain panache(can I use that word on this site?!)Definitely a Classic in the world of Imports.

The Skyline that runs here is not stock, and it's quick, but it can still be beat! "Weight", no matter how much horse power you got, is the ultimate killer on a short twisty track like we have here.

The Skyline is very fast. Can be made faster. Heavy. And sucks when stopping on snow...%/
I firm somewhere near Santa Monica were importing Skylines and converting them for US use. I believe they were running somewhere around $80,000 (used) - $160,000 (new). Can't remember the company. I believe they were not grey market cars because the firm had to crash test a few and pass DOT. I believe HKS had a purpose built 8sec Skyline running the drag circuit a few years back. When they brought it to the US on a promotional tour for their products, the best they could run was about 9sec. They blamed the hot Califonia weather. On the road course, I have no idea. But they were pretty much near the top of the food chain in Japan. A favorite amoung the canyon runners. Rumors have been floating around for years that Nissan would import the Skyline, but after alot number crunching, they have a really hard time selling a Nissan for $80,000. They are not cheap no matter how you slice it. By the way, Nissan didn't invent the Skyline, they acquired it when they purchased Prince Motor Co. They made saloon cars, the big kind you drive, not the kind you drink. Samurai |
R34
I find it hard to compare a late model car to a car with 60's technology, but a well prepared S/B Cobra with good tires, sorted springs and dampers etc will make a good showing and beat an R34 as they come from the factory!
There is an old saying and this would apply to either car: SPEED COSTS MONEY SON, HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO? |

This was at a NASA event, and both drivers were NASA instructors. Yes the driver probably played a role, but the Porsche driver was definately not a novice. The Cobra just completly dominated the Porshce. :cool: |
Ant,,,,I find it interesting to compare the Cobra to the newest technology.
It's amazing to me that such a comparison can even be attempted considering how OLD the Cobra platform is! And yet, after all these years the Cobra remains a formidable opponent. Truly that is remarkable. Ernie |
