Fast Lap Time
Anybody know what the fast lap time was at the Run n Gun in St Louis at Gateway.... last year.....
Doing some testing and looking for something to shoot for....
Also how bout Elkhart Lake ....
What was the fast lap time around Road America???

Morris, at Road America I ran a 2:30(hi-tech), Nelson ran a 2:33(FFR) last year. The csx shelby spec racer cobra's ran in the low 2:30's. Some of the vintage guys have run in the high 2:20's. Scott

Have you run at Gateway before? You may surprise yourself, I have to think it is easier to run a good time there compared to RA.
What is going on at Gateway in April?

I haven't run at the new Gateway..... did run the old one.... and liked it .... more of a Drivers track....
RA we ran good times but in GT Cars and not sure how a Cobra is going to work....
My Brother runs a Twin Turbo around Gateway many times and knows the track well.... now he's got a CSX and I'm going to try and help him sort it out.... Gateway is in his back yard.... maybe 10 miles away...
I think they are running a Driver school or something like that.... he seems to think he'll get plenty of time on the track.... good time to practice a bit....
Big Brakes and Big HP will cover alot of bad corners at RA....as long as you know how to use them....

I’ll have to look in to the April event. Not counting dirt ovals, the ’03 R&G was the first time I’d ever been on a track. Practice is what I need more than anything… that and to pick somebody’s brain on how to set up a car. I managed a few laps in the 1:11s, with practice and a good set up in the car I hope to get close to that 1:07…then again, I’m probably being overly optimistic.

At the July 2003 R.A. vintage race, Karl Schiffmayer from Barrington Hills, IL. ran a best time of 2:29.772. The next cobra was 7 seconds slower. It has to be noted the vintage guys cannot run race slicks. Hoosier street TD seems to be the tire of choice from what I saw.

You can get there..... if you are already in the 11's then setting things up will bring big steps.....
It's the Hundred's of a second that are tough and expensive....
Let me know and I'll help guide you .....
If they are going to continue to have the Run N Gun in StLouis .... then guy's that want to compete should be going down there and practicing any chance they get.....just knowing the track is worth a second..... but I mean really knowing the track..... every inch and where you can get away with letting it all hang out....

Do they make that tire in a 17" and do you know anything about the tire....
A 2:25 at RA should be achievable with a Cobra..... especially a light one... 2100 to 2300 lbs....and big brakes and HP....

Are you planning on running the Wilwoods the Kirkham's provide and staying with a traditional style wheel (15"), or going bigger brakes and a 17 inch wheel, or a 3rd choice I haven't thought of?

We are planning on 6 piston Wildwood and move the front brakes to the rear...... then use the largest rotor we can get in the wheel....
17" wheels.... not sure which ones as of yet....
We may have to water inject the brakes.... I hope not because the weight should be around 2000 Lbs..... so I'm hoping not but if need be we'll keep them kool....
I guess we're building to run pretty hard..... and be consistant.... and up here at Road America..... Brakes are very much in demand....especially after 5 laps.....
That's the plan.... not sure how it will change ..but I'm sure there will be some obstacles we'll have to over come...
I guess I'm falling into my old ways....

Are you just going for the fastest time? Then race slicks are the way to go aren't they? The VSCDA and SVRA clubs that run the vintage events around you and I require a treaded tire with a DOT marking. That particular Hoosier is a race tire that has the DOT mark with a full tread so all the Vets, Cobras, Mustangs and Cameros use it.

And yea I have to figure out a way to explain to my wife how this is a Street car that can run on a Race Track...... or is it the other way ......

Morris, now that I figured out who you are, I have seen you drive back when you drove datsuns.
Back in the 70's a group of us with 240Z's used to drive to Blackhawk Farms Raceway to run the autocross events there.
Wasn't that you that showed up with a green 240Z on a trailer
and blew us all away? I still have my same Z car.

You are so right.... but I'm alittle heavier and older and wiser now....
We use to have a ball at Blackhawk farms......and I wish I had all of my Race cars back.... they were very fast and were built very good.... even the GT-1 Corvette..... what a rocket ship that was....
I look forward to seeing you at the Cobra events at Road America this year..... starting all over is tuff on the pocket book....

Those hoosier street td's are bias ply and they work pretty well. I have had them on my cobra and have since gone to the bias ply stock car slicks. They have more grip but maybe 2 seconds faster then the hoosiers. I hope to see all you guys at road america this year. Morris, the rear uprights on a kirkam need to be modified if you run more than a .81, 12.2 inch wilwood rotor. Any bigger rotor and it will hit the top of the upright. A 2:25 would be cooking in a cobra at Road America. I do think it can be done with the right set up and a good driver. Scott
