One caution about skipping gears on the way down and going directly from 4th to 1st (or whatever): Be sure to wait until very late in the braking zone to do this so you don't over-rev the engine.
When I started driving, I used to go directly to the gear I wanted. I found I was consistently early in my downshifting, which at best was less than smooth and caused the chassis to unsettle. At worst, it caused rear lockups and was definitely not good for the engine. So, an instructor suggested I go through each gear until I got better at it. After twenty plus years of driving on tracks, I still have this habit of using all the gears. I really should switch back to just selecting the gear I need, but I'm an old dog now, so who knows what I can still learn.
