Or maybe there aren't enough GT40 owners out here to give you a good answer.
But it sure makes sense that your airflow would be much better if the fans would be out of the way on a high-speed track.

I think that the necessity of the fans outweighs any advantage losing them would give you.... maybe a motorised fan mounting that disappears at the flick of button!... no I'm only joking.
