headers

Has anyone looked into a better set of headers, maybe bigger tubes, or that flow better.

Probably just about everyone................

I don't think its the header that's the choking point. I'd be more concern with the side pipes

A&C Mufflers

I cut one apart last year and it was 2.25" dia...not to bad. I had to replace one that was damaged and went to Classic Chambered Mufflers. I was really very easy to do....

headers

I have a baffle loose on pasenger side so I was going to open it up. While inside I thought I'd see how much restriction they had. Maybe open them up a little HeHeHe what's a little more noise. I'm not completely happy with the 408 so we are pulling the motor as soon as the weather gets crappy. Changing the heads, cam and intake. Going to Trick Flow high port 225 heads, Super Victor intake and a mechanical roller cam with a more lift and duration. I'm having T.E.A. match the port to the heads. Should add about another 150 hp according to Trick Flow.

I look at it this way, ask yourself this:
Do you have to much:
Money
Sex
Beer
Vacation
I think hp fits in there somewhere many in the top 3!

open

Ok I spent the better part of the day opening up my side pipes. What a piece of crap. Both baffles were loose and banging around inside. Plus the baffles were way small. So I pulled out all the fiberglass packing and baffles and welded them back up. I'm not sure how loud it's going to be. The motor upgrades are done, engine is waiting it's turn on the dnyo. Should be ready to come home late next week. Will post more later. I'm also going to wet sand and buff out the gel coat. I buffed it this year then polished made a big difference so wet sand should help even more.

daverascal - Check out firefly performance...headers and side pipes! Best i've seen and heard!

saltshaker 11-23-2012 05:44 AM

I replaced my mufflers with Classic Chambered Mufflers and the noise level is much better.....we can talk and hear each other! It is easy to do, did it with out the reducer, flared the end of the muffler so there would be a snug fit inside the collector.

RE: 289 body cars

The headers that typically fit a 289 car are of very poor design. There is not enough primary tube length to function correctly. When the 289 FIA Cobra was designed, header science was in its infancy, and the homologation design did not have a lot of thought put into it. They were what we now call "Block Huggers." They used 1.5" diameter 10" long tubes into a 3" collector that is approx 4" long, then into open 3" exhaust sidepipes. You have to create primary tube length before the collector in a very confined space to build & maintain torque. Check my gallery.

600 hp

Got motor back made 600 hp at 7000rpms. The carb is too small using a 750 quick fuel. It was pulling 2 inches of vacumm at 3000 rpm. So I bought a 950 quick fuel. Going to start out with the 750 work out any bugs then tune in the 950. Yahoo.

Dave - 600 HP? You're gonna need a bigger (insert answer here)........................................flowp ath inside your sidepipes! 3". Plus use a little longer body length - like 24-26" if you can fit them. Don't WASTE the HP that is built into your motor with crappy flowing mufflers!

What would the best way to go be. I don't have any sidepipes yet.I built a 408w for my cobra. I like the idea of building a set with the cobrapack mufflers, but what about matching the collector on the a&c header? Would i need to buy a set and cut off the collector,or can i buy just the transition/collector

Rare Iron 12-23-2012 02:00 PM

All you need is a set of headers & merge collectors - they exit out the side & aim back - next part is the mufflers, then 3.5" turndowns. You'll need a pair of bracket hangers. It all welds together - very easy to do.

rcobrakit67 12-23-2012 03:58 PM

I'll call A&C and see of they will sell me just the merge collector. Do you suggest a certian leghth and diameter? I'm guessing the engine will put out close to 450 hp. I already have the A&C headers. I am thinking i'll want the packed mufflers. Thanks, Richie

There are some nice mufflers in this site's classified ads made by Flowmaster identical to what Jay Leno has on his 427 SOHC Cobra.

They have built in heat shields, too. I was interested but nobody local does ceramic coating and my sidepipes are currently 304 stainless.

I will probably regret not getting those mufflers. It beats hoarding ammo and dried food!!

Rare Iron 12-23-2012 08:08 PM

Does FM make some 4" round mufflers???

rpatton3 12-24-2012 10:38 AM

The Jay Leno style were 3.5" but I am sure you could find bigger.
