The threads are in a brass strip behind the chrome trim. You can remove the bras strip, shoten it by 1/2", and redrill all the holes.
Bras is fairly soft. You could use a center punch around the perimeter of the hole to make the hole smaller. Then retap the threads.
Somewhere along the line I remember some body was selling a SS replacement for the brass strip. Much stronger material.
