Custom License Plates

At the cruise this past weekend a few of the other Cobra owner's wanted to know where to get a plate to match their cars here is the link.

http://www.licenseplates.tv/

go to license plate - US State plates - select state
then scroll through by year

I would say for Arizona the Blue background and white letters
(year plate 64 & 65) would work best for the blue/white strip Cobras

That is where I got mine. They look great! They don't ship to CA, FYI

This is a GREAT site - I'd love to have California black & yellow ERA 707 for shows.

Good thing I have relatives out of state. :D

Randy, are these plates legal in AZ? I am looking at the blue/white AZ 65 plate for my blue/white 65 replica. I just put on my newest 2 year tag (August). I will have to check out a replacement tag.

I'd bet these aren't legal anywhere except in the few places that permit you to use an era-correct plate on older (usually pre-1960) vehicles. I suspect the Old Platemeister is well-disliked in all 50 states' DMVs... :D

trularin 10-20-2009 12:34 PM

I got mine at the state of Michigan.

:D

They may or may not be legal. As long as the numbers match, I doubt anyone will ever suspect otherwise.

jhv48 10-20-2009 02:41 PM

A friend of mine had his real plate number put on a period correct plate.

When he asked the DMV, they said it was illegal and that his vehicle could be impounded if caught by a police officer.

Not worth the risk to him any longer. He now uses it just for shows.

I, however, had a 65 Texas plate made that said COBRA in black letters on the white 1965 plate. Ran it for 2 1/2 years and was never stopped. Guess I was just lucky.

DMVs and cops can get grouchy at restored original plates too. I have the original plates for my Mustang, and gee, they look just like new! (But they are authentic and original, nonetheless...)

Do we have an Officer in the house? Maybe we can find out what the odds would be that he would look close enough to know it wasn't real if the plate number & state matched the registration?

jhv48 10-20-2009 03:16 PM

That's easy in Ca.

If the plate has seven numbers/digits, then it can't be on a black and orange colored plate.

They only had three letters and three numbers on the 60's plates because the mexicans hadn't arrived yet.

Well, I bought a plate. Same "AZCOBRA" as on my plate but now white on blue and says Arizona 1965. I just need to move my "tag" onto the new plate. I doubt it is illegal here since our plates don't show a year. This will match my cobra now. Kool!http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d..._plate_sml.jpg

Custom plates

Go to>>> http://www.cr8apl8.com/
They do plates for TV shows, etc. They aren't legal but they look real.
Put them on when you go to car shows etc.

Bob,
If you can't remove the tag without destroying it you can order a new tag for $5.00 at https://servicearizona.com/webapp/tabReplace/

Thanks Dan, you are handy to have around.

I've heard that if you carry around the state issued plate with you in the car then it is OK (or better) than just having the vintage plate...so ideally the numbers on the state issued plate matches the vintage plate.

*13* 10-22-2009 07:45 AM

That's not a bad idea. I know the law varies in different places, as well as enforcement. I've lived in a few different places & never have I seen what I've seen here in Los Angeles. Just as an example Ive been heading to work in the wee hours of the morning clipping along at about 80mph on the highway & had cops pass me. First off, everyone drives like a bat out of hell, but this just scared the hell out of me. & it has happened on more than one occasion. Being from the NW, if you are driving 6 mph over the speed limit can easily get you a ticket. But my point being that I doubt anyone here would ticket you for the plates, even "if" they notice unless you give them a reason to get pissy.

Maricopa 10-26-2009 12:02 PM

Absotively not legal. I wanted a vintage AZ copper/green plate and bought an old one ('73) on eBay. Others have bought vintage plates from the year of registration ('65, which were light blue and white) and been able to have their reg. switched to use that plate but you can only use one from the correct year, not a later one as I wanted to do. I talked this over with the DMV folks in person when I renewed my drivers lic.

Randy has been lucky and maybe the cops here aren't as hardcore about it as the ones in CA but a FFCobra poster got nailed there for the same thing. In his case they only took the plate and left it to him to get the car home.
