Squeaky belt, any magic solution?
 
Hey guys,

I have a Roush 511 aluminum FE Big block as most of you know. It has a Gates serpentine belt. I am on about my 3rd one. Always squeaks at start up. I have polished pulleys that I have scuffed with a wire brush, cleaned and rinsed with mild soapy water. Everything is tight, not loose. Idler pulleys good and in the right places. I'm looking for a magic solution? It's embarrassing. NO BELT DRESSING PLEASE! That stuff sucks and really will make it worse.

Tighten the SOB up...
 
Tighten up the belt such that it has less slack. Belts normally make noise on start up when they are too loose. Then again, maybe I'm just too old school but that's how I solved the problem with my fan belt noise on start up.

Could be one of the idlers sticking a bit. Pull the belt and check initial starting torque for each when cold.

Try using ivory soap on the belt.

Use GatorBack Brand Belt that has more "Edges", made to eliminate this very issue.

No motor trades welcome.... I'm going to try the Ivory soap. Do you use the liquid stuff or rub the bar on the belt? If that doesn't work, where can you get a Gatorback Belt?

Spooky, get the engine running and just use a light coat of Ivory soap, not a bath, deoderant or detergent bar, on the belt. Just hold it against the belt for about 5 seconds. Just enough to get a light coat around the entire bottom surface of the belt.

Hey T,
You did mention she squeals at start up but does engine temp seem to matter? Does starting after warmed up still make noise? Aluminum engines tend to get a little taller when hot and tighten the belt a little bit.

Changing position of a driven component (alternator maybe) allows more wrap or contact surface area of the belt. A small change of angle on driven side makes a big difference. I would guess the alternator pulley is source of squeak since it has resistance and the smallest belt contact. Drilling small holes in pulley adds a little traction and only adds wear to belt if it is still slipping on pulley. Happy hunting.

I would take the safer approach and remove the belt to do this. There have been instances of people loosing fingers when messing around serpentine belts. It will happen before you know it...won't hurt at first, but you'll wanna put your detached finger on ice and get ur ass to the ER ASAP.

Take the belt off, rub a bar of ivory soap on the grooved section of the belt, reinstall, then look at your hands and thank yourself for having common sense. Positive result all around. Just a side note, if you use the liquid kind, I would think it would fling around and create a mess.

Just duct-tape the bar of soap to the end of a stick and apply it from a safe distance.

Why not just rub the soap on the exposed parts of the belt while the belt is installed? Bump the starter a couple times and get the spots you missed. Engine is off, cool and you clean and moisturize your hands at the same time. Just a thought.

There is also a product called "BELT DRESSING" that is designed for this. http://autorepair.about.com/od/quick...t_dressing.htm

Also, if the belt has been slipping for a while, get a new one then dress it with the bar of soap or belt dressing.

Wouldn't Ivory or any soap with lanolin cause it to slip more. It might not squeal but it might still slip.

Belt dressing makes it more sticky.
