Default New guy with registration questions in AZ

Hi all,

I have been building a FFR roadster #6046 for some time now and want to get it registered in Pinal county here in AZ. I took my first trip to the DMV today and got an interesting response from the person behind the desk. When I showed him my certificate of origin from Factory Five Racing, he said, "they will have to sign the back of this and notarize it". Since this has never been registered (no VIN) I was a little surprised to hear that. However, I didn't argue with the guy since that does not usually get you very far in the process. So I thought I would ask persons on the forum if they have had experience with this process in Pinal county. I still have a few tasks to complete to get to GoKart phase so there is time but I would like to know what to do. I think I will give FFR a call tomorrow, too. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

WEK.

You will need a level one inspection and a vin will be supplied by DMV and placed on the car. I went to the DMV in Scottsdale, it cost about $30 with plates. If DMV wantes you to pay taxes on parts I would just leave and go to another DMV.

I got similar info from a friend who lives in Scottsdale. But he suggested I consult this forum to be sure. He went there, too (Paradise Lane). So I will have to trailer the car there. I was thinking that I would have to go to the DMV in my area (county). I guess that doesn't really matter does it? Too bad they aren't standardized. It would be more convenient to go to the AJ one but they don't seem to know what is going on. When I read my certificate of origin, I could plainly see that the transfer of ownership is clearly stated on the front of the document. I suppose I would sign on back and have notorized if I sell it to someone else but not for the first transaction. Thanks for your help. WEK.

You don't have to go all the way to Scottsdale. The DMV Office in Mesa is closer and alot more friendly. Just be sure to get there early.

Dan, I over-thought it and rented a trailer to take my FFR to the Scottsdale DMV but can SkullandBones get a temporary license online and drive to the Mesa DMV in his Cobra?

Boy, I don't know. If it's never been registered, I doubt it but it's worth a call. I've always trailered my cars there.

Yes you can get a temp license. Do it online.
Skull
Why would you want to reg it in Maricopa county when you live in Pinal?

Dave,
It's not that I want to register outside the county. It's just the impression I got and the attitude of the person I interacted with at the AJ DMV. He gave me erronious info saying I needed to get FFR to transfer the Cert of Origin like you would a regular "sales" transaction. And he mentioned charges for the cost of the project. When I checked on the website, it does appear that I cound be responsible for $400-$500 in taxes if you used the criteria for a new production car. This was under the kit car heading. No car builders I have talked with so far indicate having to pay such taxes. So I am a little concerned about the situation since people tend to fit the scenario into their known experiences. At this DMV, I don't think anyone has done this transaction or at least I haven't gotten to communicate with that person if they have. I will keep probing. I'm still not ready to transport the roadster, yet. Thanks, wEK.

I and others went to the Mesa (Greenfield) office. They seemed to know about kit cars. You might want to check with them. Sure are closer than any other around here.
Good luck and keep us informed.

I strongly recommend you follow Dave's advice on DMV at Greenfield and US-60. They know the car and what to do to save you a lot of time.

They can charge taxes on the price of the kit and the parts used in the build.

Here is another idea. Can you use one of the third party title places around the valley?

I am considering asking that the kit be depreciated since I bought it in 2007. If you buy a new car you have to pay a certain amount when it is in the same model year. Each year after that you pay less for the registration (AZ). I have plenty of time to think of strategies. I will also consider the Mesa site. Fitz: did you mean Less at Levy Racing? Thanks, WEK.

Didn't you get all your parts from your brother-in-law's recked Mustang?

Mike,

I went to a few of those places about six months ago down here in Tucson when I was getting the Coupe licensed. They were lost as soon as they didn't find a VIN, and trying to explain the chassis number from FFR, MSO, AZ number that they assign to the car...etc. was beyond them. The third one I visited told me that third party DMV places were not yet ready to title and license kit cars, but plans were in the works for that.

On my Roadster, I did go to a third party place after passing the level one inspection at DMV with their paperwork in hand and the new AZ tag/VIN attached, but only because DMV was packed that day and I didn't want to sit inside for an hour or more. As others have said, Gordon has done this many times and can steer you in the right direction.
