Default Can the titled year be changed in AZ?

Anyone know if a Cobra titled as 2005 or any year be changed to 1965 when registered in Arizona.

Actually out here it is done. Drat you should be able to do it as the DMV registers kit cars as the year they represent. They have a book that helps them.

Yes, of course. Just show the authorities the paperwork proving its build-date. Done.

You shouldn't have any problem, but I would not offer any more information than they specifically ask for. Take the car for inspection, without any license plate on it and don't mention that its already titled. You may want to remove a vin sticker, if there is one and the inspector will issue a new number, corresponding to the new title. Just thinking these ideas might avoid complications. I may be off base with these ideas, but its what I'd do in the situation.

For all the pundits:

Arizona is not your state. In Arizona, the law is clear on how to title and register a kit car. The law is written such that a kit car is required to be titled as the vehicle year it represents. The model is often identified as SPCNS or something to that effect, which, when combined with the Arizona-provided VIN clearly differentiates titles between real Cobras and fakey-do kit cars. The system works very well and prevents all the issues with emissions, safety equipment, and vehicle manufacturers. We do not have extra bureaucracy where a bunch of rules have to be written and state employees have to have formal processes, forms, and churn, whereby all 20XX manufactured vehicles have to go through emissions testing and comply with all the CFRs, except these pesky kit cars and by the way - "here are the rules for your 'special' process that the state spent money to develop, and the state employees will spend extra time processing". On the contrary, our process is simple, effective, and once your kit car is titled, it is treated like all other '65 or '66 cars on the road. Given the current state of the economy, taxes, and governmental debt, I would think more states should look to Arizona as a leader in the KISS method of handling titles and registration. I guess some folks just like bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy.

DWRAT,

When I brought mine from Texas, it had a Nebraska assigned VIN and a Texas title with a 2000 year on it. I showed them all the paperwork, and in accord with AZ law, they assigned a new VIN from Arizona and titled it as a 1966. Yours should follow the same process.

Mine is an FFR Mk1 built in 2002. It's registered as a 2002 kit rod when I bought it. AZ exempts it from emissions as it s insured as a collectible. So I haven't bothered changing it. Don't know if I could.
