I seem to get about 10 mpg. Most driving is on country roads so am not
blazing but do enjoy getting on it here and there. No gas gage so I watch
the odometer but with a 42 gallon tank don't worry about it and fill it about
every 100 miles. That keeps the sticker shock down when I fill it.
I am talking about the Kirkham here.

If that was my car, I wouldn't run it until I figured out where all the fuel is going. A well tuned 302ci carbed engine should get around 12 around town and in the low 20's on the hiway.

Check your plugs. My guess is that they are either black or wet (or both). The MSD 6AL will still fire a plug even if it is soaked in fuel. You are shooting raw fuel directly into the cylinders and will wash the cylinder walls in effect wiping out your ring seal. Then, the gas will dilute your oil and you'll lose everything that depends on oil for lubrication.

Your right about the plugs. That is part of the sorting out that I'm going though, trying to find a plug that will work in all cylinders while still trying to get the right fuel/air mix in the carbs and the timing to where it's most happy.
If I can get the rear plugs to burn like the front , I'll be on the right track.
But the carbs are off the engine right now, getting different throttle end plates put on, so I won't be able to do anything till I get them back ( 2 weeks ). I had to change the linkage because the throttle hung open 3 times while on test drive. The end plates that were on the carbs could not be used with my new ( and better) linkage.
Thanks for advice . Most appreciative.

289 with 48 IDA's & 4 spd. Never officially checked it but if I were to formulate a WAG, I'd say 11 in town while shifting conservatively and about 14 on the hiway at 2900-3000 criuse RPM, and MUCH less if in the throttle hard.

WHO CARES.......and what's a "Fuel Budget"????

I'll share a true story fuel economy carried too far. I am employed by a good sized Chevrolet Dealership in Central California, we have a large Solar panel that is tied into the grid and has 2 charging stations for Electric vehicles. It is noted on various Eco friendly advisory forums. About 9:30 one Saturday morning early in the Spring a young family stopped in to charge their car while traveling to So Cal. They had traveled about 65-70 miles and were plugged in most ALL DAY until after 4:30. They had two young children running around the Lounge area and making a mess. It got me to thinking that if you could only go this far before being forced to recharge (ours source was free) what do people think their time is worth if driving one of these types of cars long distance (no gas engine backup) they were headed to Los Angeles. That could have taken a friggn week.

mikiec 08-05-2014 04:49 PM

Drive like Mikiec and get about 17 around town. 25 on the road.

FuzzyDiceRide 08-05-2014 10:25 PM

I finally got my car on the road but there is a problem . I can't keep my foot out of it !
I drove 30 miles the other day and fill up was 5.4 gal. ,so the mpg is not good .KC 427W
If gas doubles then I will cry about it . Right now the fun is worth all the money and
time I spend working on the car. Someday I plan to make a 100 mile trip and I think
I could get much better at a constant rpm in o.d. . Right now I don't care how much
gasoline I am burning . It's 1965 all over again I don't pass many gas stations .

Danr55 08-06-2014 05:34 AM

There it is! It's about the ride not the $$ in the gas tank..

1985 CCX 08-06-2014 08:35 AM

3mpg
:LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:

trularin 08-06-2014 09:21 AM

LOL

With or without my foot in the carb????

Made it to London from Flint on $66 ( premium fuel ) doing 65 and no "fun".

I'm with 1985 CCX, 3 if I am lucky. :D :D :D :D :D

Fitz 08-06-2014 11:49 AM

Some of these reports remind me of hp ratings. Aren't we stretching results a bit? Ha
I had 700 hp until I dynoded and then had 400hp ...whoops

FuzzyDiceRide 08-06-2014 12:45 PM

KC stroked 351/427, afr 205 heads ,780 quick fuel on the dyno at KC 533hp 530 tq.
That is with a couple burnouts and other tests . My car has 480 miles and still teething
with all the new car problems . My car is running nasty rich . I need a good carb guy.
I would think tuned right with my 3.50 gears I could get 15 easy . 60 mph bout 2200 r's

Fitz 08-06-2014 01:13 PM

Bob Reams (602) 377-4093. Nobody better at carbs and injection - north west side

FuzzyDiceRide 08-06-2014 06:08 PM

Fitz , There should be some Holley gurus in Tyler or Dallas . I installed a 600 cfm Holley today that I had rebuilt for another project and the engine is running much better . Power is down but running better though and no black smoke at crank up. Thanks ,Mike gas mileage should be improved ...... that's nuff of my opinion:D

Maricopa 08-08-2014 12:04 PM

Back when my fuel gauge was dead I tracked this stuff pretty carefully and got @16 city and 25hwy...and that wasn't taking it easy, just 'normal' driving. ;)

Now I have neither speedo nor fuel gauge so I just fill up a lot.

DWRAT 09-18-2014 06:23 PM

Just got my car back from Bob Reems so I will see if my fuel mileage gets better.
He rebuilt my carb and did my distributer.
It doesn't stink nearly as bad as it did, I use to gage myself at a stop light and forget about running it in the garage.
It runs well but I must say it always ran very smooth, just super stinky.
Now I just need to find $4,000.00 for a Fast fi system or $7,000,00 for a stack fi system.
