You're almost right Bob, whilst the scale is logarithmic, the sound energy doubles with every three point increase. 
I used an intercom with Peltor noise cancelling headsets. They're much more effective than earplugs and allow me to listen to music, satnav, answer my telephone and have a comfortable and easy conversation with my passenger.
