Painting spats with Plasti Dip or Plasti Kote?

Has anyone used Plasti Dip or Plasti Kote for painting spats?

No, but I've used it (black ) on wheels and lower front ( covers all the chips and scratches by oil cooler). Easy to apply and has held up very well over 2 years.

I live a few minutes from Trax. If you're ever around on Fri evenings, the cruise at mineral beach is great. A few cobras usually show up.

I've done if on my car. $5.00 spats, the exact size you want and look great...
Tape off area with painters tape, spray a few coats, use a blade to cut plasti-dip where it meets the painters tape (but be careful not to cut into your cars paint), peel tape off. Looks great and works great. When you don't want it anymore just peel it off.

You cut thru 90% of the depth of the plasti-dip before you pull the tape because if you don't it will pull off the part you want to keep...

If notecards can fit under the spat edge, just remove them before each coat dries. How I do wheels without tape.

I did the Plasti-dip spats. Like Kevin said, just tape it off, spray a few coats and carefully cut the edge at the tape.

If you don't like it..... just peel them off.

From what I've read, if the edging tape is pulled off while the plasti-dip is still wet, then it leaves a nice edge. Once it has had the chance to cure, then taking tape off will leave a jagged edge, unless its cut first ( which of course is extra work and possible cut into the cars paint).
Has anyone tried the clear plasti-dip ( i think there is a clear and then a gloss finisher) on the cobra nose to protect from bugs or stone chips??

Danr, I have been running hard with BillBoards, I don't have much left on the front of the rear fenders, let alone the ends of my pipes look like they have been sand blasted.

I tried the 3M 90000 Paint Defender Spray Film on the spats and I'm pleasantly surprised with the results.
I started with the spats because they were smaller and easier, I touched up a couple very small chips, before I started. I masked off the passenger side spat, strategically covered the surrounding areas and tires with a couple old / cheap drop-cloths. Then I applied the supplied wax (to remove it easier later). After removing the wax and giving it a buff, I applied the film as the instructions specified. I applied it a little heavier down low, because the passenger side seems to take more of a beating than the drivers side (more gravel on that side of the road). It went on pretty well at first, but I did notice it start to spray and spit blobs after using it. I got better on reducing those on the second spat, but to tell you the truth, it is self-leveling (even on a vertical surface) and after it dried, I really didn't notice it. It looked rather cloudy at first, but seemed to dry clear and surprisingly smooth after a couple hours.

Hard to get a good picture, but this is right after spraying and removing the masking while still fresh and wet.


This is after it dried for 4 hours, this picture does show a little bit of orange peel, but the flash really exaggerates it.


Without flash, it looks much better. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but I really didn't notice any significant imperfections in the finish. (too many reflections in these pictures).


Drivers side. I had one spot on the edge of the fender that got flubbed, because the masking paper hit it as I was removing it. Actually, it looked like it almost disappeared.


Overall, I'm pretty happy with the results, given the cost and time invested. Additionally, I knew if I really didn't like them, I could peel them off.

I also applied it to the nose, but it was more challenging to mask off and spray consistently, but it still came out very good and has been protecting my paint for about 4 months now.
For the price, I highly recommend it.

Looks good. I do like the fact that if you don't like it, peel it off.

In my old neighborhood, my friend was the 3M auto rep. He had everything in his garage, lucky for me He had a soft liver and bartered for good wine.

Now he lives in Dallas and sells to of all people the gas monkey guys.
