garage makeover
Started insulating the garage today. Got 11 of the 40 spaces between the 2X4 done. Going slow as I have to remove all the shelving the previous owner installed. I need to have an electrician move 6 outlets out to accommodate the wall board, also add 4, 48" florescence lights.
Must say it was chilly doing it. Mike |
Best thing I did in my little garage was not use drywall on the walls. After I insulated between the studs and got my electrical sorted, I did the whole place in 1/2" plywood and painted it. I can screw / attach various things anywhere I want and don't worry about drywall holding it up.;)

Good point.

Garage makeover?
2 words; Beer Fridge :D |
Had not thought of that. Duh.
|
I thought that went without saying;)
Cabinets....get twice as much as you think you need right now. Workbench....make it durable, not pretty. Pegboard...If you do cabinets over your workbench, fill the space between with pegboard. Just my 2c |
Work bench will be massive, not pretty.

A friend of mine built a shop in his back yard and used CAD to create cabinets that were anchored to the wall overhead and above eye level leaving the entire floor open. They were framed with 1.25 Box tubing and had laminate doors and plywood bottoms, held tons of stuff but did not detract from the working area.

Heat, Mikec, lots of HEAT!
Also, mount some lights on the side walls in addition to the overheads. Big help! |
Hey Mikie,
Install the electric outlets above the work bench level. Easier to get to. Speakers ?? |
The Garage is already wired. The outlets are up about 36" off the floor. Sound system will be installed.
Karl, heat will come but not until next year. |

Compressed air: I ran piping and outlets around the garage from my compressor. One right next to the workbench and also one to an air hose reel mounted up high and out of the way. They all have come in handy.
|
I also installed a separate disconnect and outlet for my welder, plasma cutter etc that I might want to use outside. The timer switch on the wall controls a big exhaust fan in the roof gable to blow out engine exhaust etc.

garage ideas

I think the beer fridge, compressor and welder are all great ideas. You also might want to consider whether you want to do anything special for the floor and/or the ceiling, and perhaps allow for wiring for a TV antenna. I also salvaged our kitchen cabinets when my better half remodeled our kitchen.
Good luck on your project! |
Dang, why go into the house? just set up a bed and you are sleeping with the gasoline.

Rather than plywood, why not 3/4 inch sheetrock. It is code in NY state for garages. I finished my makeover in 2012. You also may want to consider, vinyl flooring, wide screen tv, dvd player, in wall speakers, amplifer, phone and computer.
|
And a good security alarm system!
|
Mikiec,
Do you have high ceilings? Install a lift. I also, recommend a sink, paper towel holder and trough. In the two weeks of summer you have, you can pee outside, but the other 50 weeks a trough is the way to go. Dave from Chandler |
