Kirkham from the movie Ironman

I saw that the crushed Kirkham from Ironman sold to Gas Monkey Garage. They said they will rebuild it.....

I didn't know it was in Queen Creek.

mikiec 01-15-2015 06:57 AM

Yes, the car was at the BJ gathering at the Pav last year.

How much did Gas Monkey's pay for it?

RestoCreations 01-15-2015 07:48 AM

It sold for $22,000. It initially sold for $18,000 at Mecum in 2010. I bought the uncrushed movie car at that auction for $35,000 plus commission. Whoever bought it in 2010 just paid a hefty storage fee for 4.5 years. $3,640 in auction fees plus transportation x2 equals around $6,000-$7,000. So they lost around $2,000-$3,000 on the car.

NO WAY they can rebuild that car without a complete new body. All parts on the car are pretty much junk. They claim the drivetrain was taken out for the show, but that car never had a drivetrain, nor did mine. The suspension is all made from defective reject parts, there are rods in place of the coil-over shocks, the side pipes are fake, there is no differential or brakes, all electronics are fake, etc. The suspension, brakes, and rear end are going to cost around $25,000 alone, not to mention a new body $35,000???, and I have to wonder if the frame is damaged?
I ended up with close to $100,000 in the uncrushed Ironman Kirkham. I walked away with 119,000 in my pocket when i sold it at Mecum in 2012, which means i made about $23.00 per hour for the time i spent building it into a functional street car.

I thought somebody on here already re-built the Iron Man Kirkham

unless there were 2 of them, which I suppose would make sense for a movie's purposes.

Edit: apparently typing at the same time as restocreations....it all makes sense now.

That would be me. There are two of them, one crushed and one not. I built the one that did not get crushed.

Mark IV 01-15-2015 08:37 AM

I hope the do a better job than the wrecked F40 they did. I saw it at Barrett-Jackson last year and was not impressed with the "rebuild".

I thought the Ironman car had already been redone?

RestoCreations 01-15-2015 09:03 AM

Again, I built the uncrushed ironman car. See my avatar, that's her. There is no way they can rebuild that car and make money off of it. The only future value the crushed ironman car has is if it stays crushed as a movie prop.

RestoCreations 01-15-2015 09:06 AM

Here is the link to the build thread of the uncrushed ironman movie car. Plenty of pictures of both cars side by side.

Sometimes I think the Gas Monkey folks aren't the brightest bulbs on the tree.

That car was worth more as scrap aluminum... They obviously didn't look under the skin to see what was there.

Paul

Well of course, but as i previously stated, i think this car's future value is only as a movie prop.

Just a quick add up

22,000 purchase price plus 10 percent commission.
$25,000 for suspension, brakes, and rear end
$25,000 for an FE engine and TKO transmission
$35,000 or so for a new body
$10,000-$15,000 for paint and bodywork
$3500 for headers and side exhaust
$5,000-$8,000 for electrical, gauges, and new interior
$5000 for miscellaneous....steering column, steering shaft, horn button, shifter, etc.
$3,000 for fuel tank, brackets, fuel lines, fuel pump, and fuel filter
Then there is transport, overhead, insurance, consignment fees, seller's commission, etc. etc. etc.

I could give them the number of the current owner of the car I built and save them a lot of headaches. Maybe they can just put the crushed car in secret storage and run my old car through auction next year claiming it as the rebuilt crushed car. :)

Fast289 01-15-2015 10:21 AM

One thing is for sure, GMG will do a show on it and say they made $

Only in America.....

66gtk 01-15-2015 10:38 AM

If I had that car, I'd buy an Ironman replica and display the car as is with Ironman collapsed on it. Talk about a cool conversation piece!

I don't think Richard (isn't that the owner of Gas Monkey?) worries about the $$ as much as he does about self-glorification...despite his protestations to the contrary on the show when they run over budget or behind schedule.

He sure does worry about having enough beer, though, doesn't he!

...oh, yeah...he owns a bar/grill, too...having enough beer should never be a problem for him...go figure....

Cheers!

Doug

Well he drinks Miller Lite, so I guess at 6'2" he needs a lot of it to catch a buzz. I am sure miller provides him with enough to bathe in it daily.

Just curious how the special effects did that damage to it? Dropping a wreaking ball on it etc? I know in the movie Ironman falls on it.

Seems like Aaron on the show is a good mechanic but he is constrained by having to do full restorations in a week or two. The rest of the guys there do total schlock work, complete with cheap O'Reilly oil.
