Spring time on the road around Tucson - Who gets the Challange Trophy?

ROAD TRIP............ROAD TRIP...................ROAD TRIP.........ROAD TRIP

I am organizing a weekend road trip starting and ending in Tucson, Friday is a BBQ at my house. Saturday is south to Tubac with stops along the way. Overnight in Rio Rico then east through Patagonia and Sonoita to Kartchner Caverns; lunch back in Tucson; dessert at Dairy Queen to decide whole gets the Challenge Trophy.

More details will be announced as they become available.

A more detailed description:

OPTIONAL FRIDAY PM ACTIVITIES
Those that want to travel Friday there are Hotels at Cortero Road exit (I plan to get a block of rooms for the group); everyone is welcome at our place for burgers and brats (BYOBS - bring your own bottle of Scotch).

SATURDAY
We meet at the Valero NW corner of Romero and Prince at 9 am. Gas up.

Head to the Franklin Auto Museum; spend an hour there.

Then to the mission (about 40 minute drive) for 1 hour max. for tour and pictures.

Less than an hour to Tubac ( arrive about 1 pm) for lunch and shopping. More mission visiting at Tumacacori next to Wisdom’s gets the group ready for dinner between 5 and 6 at Wisdom's (Mexican food w/ fruit burrito for dessert) 4 miles down the frontage road.

Jump on I-19 south a couple exits after dinner to Esplendor Resort at Rio Rico with a bar and great views.

SUNDAY
On the road by 9; next exit south is Ruby road; Cheaper gas at the Pilot Truck Stop. Back road short cut to AZ 82.

AZ82 takes us to Sonoita thru Patagonia ... great drive but there's a speed trap ALWAYS around Patagonia.

In Sonoita we continue to head east to AZ 90 and then head north to Kartchner Caverns ($23 / head); hour and half tour time.

Head north to I-10; get gas before the freeway.

Get off at Craycroft and Triple T Truck stop; Omar’s is traditional down home cookin’.

Gas up; head for Dairy Queen for the awarding of the Challenge trophy; then head home.

Driving directions will be added and or linked soon???

Kartchner Caverns require a reservations for a specific tour time.

I need to know by email (rlrileysr@gmail.com) by the 1st of March hotel head count to set aside a block of rooms for both Friday and Saturday; you will have to make your reservation by (TBD) and are responsible for cancelling if needed.
By the 7th of March I need Friday night head count; Saturday and Sunday head count. Cancellation for the trip need to be to me by the 14th to adjust all the reservations.
I don’t know about cancelations for Kartchner Caverns ((TBD).

Bring on the Spring

Dates are March 20 to 22nd. I'm in. This is just what we need to end winter and bring in the spring.
This looks great Rick & Kelli.
I'll bring the challenge trophy. Of course we know who will win. Tell Tucson John to bring his $2 bills. I'll bring mine.

Adriana and I are in.. as for looking great, Kelli always does, about Rick I have my doubts.. Should be fun.. Perhaps those of us going south on Friday can meet around Wild Horse pass and travel together? What time works for everyone?

Bob Broberg SPF667 460BB 02-10-2015 10:37 PM

I'll join you on Friday for the run south. We have plenty of time to determine when to leave. 38 days still.
Sent e-mail to rick to confirm.

I'll be doing the run, starting Friday. I'll pass on the caverns, since I've been through them 4x. My sweetie may accompny with the promise of ice cream. Yet to be determined.

Remember The PHX chapter has never lost a challenge. If I send Bob a model of my car will it count?

Model of MikieC's Car

I have one. At least part of one.

It'll shed some light on the competition.

Bob, the stripes are too narrow and the lights are too bright..

Karl Bebout 02-11-2015 11:19 AM

"Bob, the stripes are too narrow and the lights are too bright.."

And the grill, and it's 'way too clean and shiney, to be Mikie's. Needs LOTS of salt stains and rust dripping off the frame.

mikiec 02-11-2015 11:27 AM

The rust stains have been sanded and painted. LOL.

Bob
Where did you get that?? I have never seen anything like it.

Stu.

Bob Broberg SPF667 460BB 02-12-2015 09:21 AM

Sorry Stu, go it as a gift 10+ years ago. Never saw or found another one even online. It's a night lite with led lenses. On/off switch on the bottom.

If no tickets purchased all ready for MLB spring training it sounds like fun. I'll be a Maybe for now.

Mike Brasfield 02-12-2015 09:43 AM

Sounds like a good trip. I'll talk to my navigator and follow up.

Karl Bebout 02-12-2015 03:36 PM

Mesa Mike, you're always saying you want the group to do something different. This B it. I'm working on getting my sweetness to go, but she's waffling about going to UMass. to see The Devil Child. I'm thinking this will be a really nice weekend of driving and seeing lotsa stuff.

hinoonaz 02-12-2015 07:45 PM

This sounds like a great trip. Count Vikki and I in for three days of fun.

Hellllooooo....is anyone out there?

OK....

This has been posted for a week now...and all I got was 7 responses. I would like a copy of the phone list to check out who is or isn't coming or doesn't care enough to say something. BTW please email me so I can send updates directly to those who are interested. rlrileysr@gmail.com

Danr55 02-16-2015 03:42 PM

Rick there are two things that are more important than club meetings and dues. One is the motto: If you show up fine. If you don't that's OK too. There are always folks who will show up without saying anything and folks who will not shown up when they say they will. By the way, we don't have meetings and we don't pay dues. The second is keeping your Cobra off of the mountain side.

Spring Challenge Trip

Rick, 7 responses is not bad so far. Still more than a month away. Weather will always be a game changer. 7 cars would make for a fun trip. Specially if 4 are from Phoenix so we keep the trophy. As we get closer the "itch to drive" will kick in and add more members. Keep bringing the thread to the top perhaps every week to help remind all of us with short memories. Thank you for all your hard work in preparation. This could be the start of an annual event.
I'll remind all attendees to e-mail Rick and Kelli. Rick Riley E-mail Address(es): rlrileysr@gmail.com

I also understand there will be Scotch, Cigars and the Bose Soundlink.

AZ Bob
