Recommended machine shop/engine builders in Arizona?

I have a big block engine project that needs to get started one of these days. Are there any reputable shops in the Phoenix or Northern Arizona areas that come highly recommended for machining, balancing, sleeving and building services? The plans are for a stock to mild rebuild on a 428 CJ. that's able to stand up to the Arizona heat, and of course having AC.

If you don't find anyone satisfactory in the PHX area, Larry's Speed and Marine here in Tucson has huge experience. Total machine shop services too.
No, it's not my shop!

Levy racing built my engine. He is in Maricopa AZ. My car runs great. He has a website, just google Levy Racing. He always answers his phone or gets back to you via email in minutes.

Ask Danr55, he's sure had a lot of engines built and rebuilt.

If you want an FE motor built in Arizona, no one is better than Standard Machine in Glendale...

I can vouch for Standard Machine. I have known the owner, Roger Lorton for over 20 years and he is top notch. He builds high performance motors and knows what it takes to make them live.

1. Arizona Race Company in Chandler 480-703-7313 (Doug) Engine builder, race, street, drag
2. B&B Machine in Mesa (Bill) 480-649-8243 Full machine shop
3. Basko Engine in Gilbert (Ray)480-967-1956 Full machine shop w/dyno

I have used both B&B and Basko for lots of engine machining work. Just met with AZ Race for discussion of new build SB 427. All 3 are very professional companies and can help you with your project

Be careful of Levy.

Fast289 08-29-2015 11:43 AM

Can you contribute a bit more on Levy? Just wondering why you said that.

Generally speaking, those perspectives and/or opinions are probably best handled 1:1, through PM or other means.

YMMV

Fast289 08-29-2015 12:08 PM

Agreed, I have nothing to do with the business in question, I just don't like when people make comments like ChiChris made. Not looking to stir things up, or argue, just say facts.

Cheers

Where's Drduc when you need him?

I've heard nothing but good about standard machine but I hear they are very busy.

Danr55 08-29-2015 01:56 PM

Dan the good shops are usually very busy.

DrDuc 08-29-2015 03:15 PM

Contact me directly and I'll give you a personal opinion on Levy. Granted it's only mine.

Maybe way up there in the frozen north, but us Arizona guys crap talk with the best on our local club thread.

Karl Bebout 08-29-2015 04:53 PM

Dave, also talk to Fitz and the results of his dyno run.

ChiChris 08-29-2015 06:21 PM

Sure, PM me on why one should be careful dealing w/Levy.

More than happy to provide the facts.

mikiec 08-30-2015 09:11 AM

Who's facts.. Yours?

Every shop has it's share of issues and possibly bad customers. No shop can and ever will be 100% perfect and customers will never be 100% right.
