Default I'll Need a New Excuse

My SpeedHut GPS speedometer is working just fine, after many trials and tribulations. Finally, after taking Jeff Classic's and Bruce Bosley's advice, I replaced my 66 amp alternator with a 110 amp unit and my speedo problems seem to be taken care of. Seems I was getting voltage spikes that goofed up the speedo. The low output didn't do well when my electric fan would kick on, drawing probably 30 amps.

I guess I'll have to conjure up a different excuse, on the off chance I would ever be speeding, now that my speedometer not only works but is very accurate.

BTW, the SpeedHut people were excellent in trying to deal with my problem. I could not ask for better customer service.

Mine arrived day before yesterday. It's sitting in my den waiting for me to install it (maybe tomorrow, if I manage to free up a couple hours)

Glad to hear you knocked out those pesky gremlins, Karl.

I put a set of Speedhut gauges in my old Corvette this summer. I had some ground issues to resolve, but the gauges seem to be all I hoped they would be. .... I did catch the speedometer needle once rapidly rising from zero to the 60 MPH I was traveling about a quarter mile from my place. Apparently the GPS was a little slow on that occasion. Otherwise, with about 1,600 miles on them, the gauges work fine.

Karl's only drawback now is he knows the top speed is really only 110, not 140.

CarNut, Considering the tiny FoMoCo enigine in my car, I never had any illusions that it would ever go over 110. Well, maybe down a very long hill with a ferocious tail wind.

I got my SpeedHut speedo installed yesterday - went for a short test drive and it seemed to work great - I ended up placing my GPS antenna on the cowl, in the same place Karl has his.

However- Since I had the speedo out of the car, I decided to swap the placement of the speedo and the tach, and it seems that the simple process of unhooking the tach, moving it over one hole, and re-installing it was enough to break it...

So now I have a new tachometer on order, too... I decided on an old-school retro look with a 180-sweep Sun gauge style tachometer

Maybe I should just toss all these SW gauges in the trash...

Sure do, that's why I didn't go with a truck motor.

I did get the Speedhut special price on my speedometer.

and, The retro style tach I selected was also on sale at Summitracing for $93 bucks. This is the one I ordered:

https://www.boschperformance.com/pro...meter-fst-8050

I'll get it installed tomorrow, and will post some pictures. It is actually a pedestal mounted tach, so I will have to take the housing apart, and modify it to make it mount in the dash...

Got my new speedo and tach all installed, and working... Here's a little before and after action:

Broken Speedo, and soon to be broken tach:

New speedo and tach, each placed in a location that better suits my eyes while driving:

The only gripe I have about this Bosch retro tach is that the back-lighting is green, while the rest of my gauges are white, but that's pretty minor. I think it's a green LED, so if it starts to bug me too much, I guess I'll just take it apart again, and solder in a white LED...but probably not.

Robert, I really like the retro tach look. Surprised you didn't get the Cobra face plate on the speedo.
Maybe you'll figure out some sort of rattle can cure for the tach's light color?
I'm just sayin'....

No- I only rattle can wheels and sidepipes.

And then I huff whatever's left in the can, and I stare off into space, watching the marshmallows chase the monkeys around the tap-dancing elephants....

Them elephants - are their toenails red? I remember some ballet elephants with red toenails. They were mesmerizing.
