Facebook group mod?

I'm Shawn in Tempe and requested into the FaceBook group a while ago. I have been pending and wanted to start to get to know you guys. It says Paul is the admin and I messaged him last Friday with no response.

Can anybody help out with that?

I don't live anywhere near Arizona, but even I know that Karl somehow got locked out of his original Club Cobra account months ago.

FB (and social media in general) encourages keyboard commandos. Forums , like CC, encourage knowledge sharing, storage and retrieval along with the occasional keyboard commando (we try to retrain them though). Pick the poison that best suits your needs.

Thanks Ed. I have a question since we're talking about FB. Couple years ago, a club member found a post on FB, about one of my cars, I said cool, let's see it, now granted it was couple weeks after he had first seen it, We literally had to scroll through hundreds of posts that came after the one we were looking for., never did find it. I had the same issues when cars for sale are posted on FB. Once someone posts on a FB post, it's at the top, then as more people post, that post of yours just goes down the list, without a way to trace or retrieve it, Am I right or Wrong?? Facebook is a linear stream and with so much unrelated material pretty much the only thing it's good for is talking about "now".

Forums are threaded discussions, keeping related topics in a hierarchical time ordered format.

Facebook generates so much garbage that it's worthless (as are all the rest). The ones that really make out are Seagate and Western Digital (Hitachi drive division) that make enterprise class hard drives since every bit of it is retained. Nothing on the internet is ever deleted. It just goes into cold storage (all hard drives). Drive guys love it. (I used to be a drive guy. One of the inventors of Serial ATA - SATA - and USB3.0 and the USB-C connector.)

"The Facebook" curates your feed. So even if you see something new, then refresh, it may be gone. They keep the data on who you interact with and they prioritize that info.

Full disclosure — I'm biased.

That said, the FB architecture provides fertile ground for the keyboard commando crowd, with little or no organization or meaningful searchability — exactly the problem you experienced, Tommy. This is attractive to a certain type of individual. Fortunately (for us) that same type of individual usually finds sites like CC unattractive.

Occasionally a misguided social media type will find his way out of social media, if only momentarily, and begin practicing his social media behavior where ever he happens to land. These occurrences are usually few and infrequent because mediums like CC do not provide the platform to as easily engage in keyboard commando assaults. Quickly tiring of the more disciplined behavior and rules, the keyboard commando returns to his usual habitat.

Thank you (Ed, Tony) that confirms exactly why FB isn't for me I have no need or desire to be in the "Fast Pace" world of FB The "Quickest" thing I need in my life is my Cobra. So, if I need something off FB, I'll just contact you two As always, Cheers TommyRot.

"I don't do Facebook " or any of the others. I do have a Facebook acct but only because a slot machine and 21 fame I play apps on my phone uses Facebook to store points. I go on every once in a while for some kind of maintenance and see all these friend requests. I tell those that matter that I'm not ignoring them but that I only log in maybe once a year. The other advantage forums give you is the ability to see stuff that on facebook would scroll out of your view window. If you're logged in then almost all Forum software keeps track of what you've read, and allows you to use the "New Posts" button to see what has happened since you last "mark(ed) forums read" (or read all the posts to an empty new posts list). That way you see what you missed, read what you're interested in and can clear the rest. Lather, rinse, repeat.

And don't forget SEARCH! It is your friend. In a forum as limited in scope and that has lived as long as this one, you can almost bet that any question you can think of has already been asked at least once, and many times, many times, since people don't use search. Especially tech questions.

Another tip is to look at the specific area of your inquiry. For example, questions about registrations? Look in the registrations subforum and scroll through the pages of topics, good chance your question is already there...

It was internal (never sold to customers) and pre-dates "the internet" (when we were still on the Arpanet backbone, in fact we had intra-company email before we got a real internet gateway and could send email to outside contacts.) Len Kawell who wrote VAXnotes went on to create what became Lotus Notes, which grew into an enterprise email and general database front end, and also had threaded discussions. VAXNotes was easier to use for the "forum" stuff than Lotus. I used Lotus for many years at a well known hard drive company. Forum software was modeled after VAXnotes and Lotus Notes discussions and a handful of companies created similar products, this being one. New ones are still being done, all dressed up with modern looking fronts, but all providing the same basic function. End of internet history lesson for 2/20/22.

I used a lot of PROFS at IBM in the early 1990s, then Lotus Notes after that. Notes had a LOT of forum capability. I've been away from that environment for 10 1/2 years now and I still think Notes was / is a far better product than MS Exchange and Outlook - especially when I have to uninstall and re-install Outlook because of file corruption that I never experienced with Notes. Alas, like Beta vs VHS, the better marketers (Microsoft) beat the better product in the market. IBM, of course, sold the Notes / Domino business to HCL 3 years ago, but development continues and products are still available.

The manufacturing portion of <HDD company> used Lotus as a front end for data mining and that portion stayed around for quite a while. We used it for email. The database was good. Some people had a "shim" that adapted Lotus email to Outlook. The advantage was that the email lived on your system and didn't age out. We eventually switched to enterprise gmail.

Ahhh Memories. Dec PDP 11 series toggle flipper here. Still have my first Star Trek game on paper tape somewhere. Had to laugh I admit listening to the early days of the internet. Probably why I like my cobra so much. Cheers.

I worked at DEC for almost 20 years before palmer sold the HDD division to quantum.

I used to know the toggle addresses for the rk05 and dectape boots for 11/20 and 11/45.

I had a front panel for a 11/74. Quad 11/70 that ran M+. Project canceled for VAX 11780. Panel is at the computer museum in the bay area.

I assembled the first fully configured VAXCluster in Colorado springs. VMS engineering had CPUs but we had the first HSC50 and I wrote and debugged the CI code and got the first full IO hsc going. We packed it and took it to DECUS
