Default '65 - '70 Mustangs in AZ... how much$$$ to buy?

I'm contemplating taking an old Mustang home with me after the Fling. I hope I'm right in assuming that AZ Stangs would have less rust than the coastal states.

What sort of money would a "reasonably" straight, driveable fastback sell for at the moment? I'm thinking of something that might run pretty well, but at the cheaper end of the market (not a basketcase though...) I really only need a roller because we have a complete drivetrain ready to go, but I don't suppose there are many rollers for sale.

Is there much difference in price between the 65-68 and 69-70 fastbacks?

Thanks for any advice!

Craig Marsh

Craig,

I know where one might be - it was for sale about a year ago and priced, I believe in the 1k or so range. Needed lots of restoration and I didn't feel like messing with it, so I passed.

I can find out if it is still around - it's a 65 or 66 fastback located about 50 miles from here.

I have one also - a 65 fastback daily driver that isn't really for sale, although I do have quite a few rear seating compartment, trim, louvers, etc. type parts that came out of my car. You're welcome to them if you find a car and need/want some of those pieces.

As far as prices, they will probably range, depending on condition, etc. I paid $3,500.00 for mine about 7 years ago and it sort of ran, but not for long. Have gone through pretty much all of it - still needs exterior paint though.

I'd also guess that the 65/66 vs. 67/68 price ranges might be similar, as some folks like the original 65 and 66 body style, where others prefer the "Bullit" 67 and 68 body style.

The larger 69+ cars, I don't think are as popular. Just my opinion.

Let me know if you'd like for me to check on that fastback that I knew about a year ago. Could probably find out in a day or two.

Craig, down here in Tucson the fastbacks are somewhat hard to find during those years, 65-70. About every two weeks I see an ad in the newspaper about one and the 64,65,66 models go for about $7,500.00. That would be a 289 with recent paint (3 years) and fair interior. Very few 69 and 70 fastbacks are for sale. Of course the '69 was a "one-of-a-kind" with the four headlights. The 67 and 68 are the best to convert to Shelby status. You can view our newspapers via the internet by going to: www.tucsoncitizen.com or www.azstarnet.com. Both of our newspapers have the same classified ads. You will find the "Antique-Classic" listings and all of the cars for sale are in there. I would guess that you could do the same thing with the Arizona Republic newspaper which is the Phoenix paper. This will give you up-to-date info on our prices. See you in ten days, John-Tucson

Neal, thanks for the offer of the parts and tracking down that car, but it sounds like it might be a little too far gone. Tracking down small "resto" pieces gets pretty expensive over here, so I really think I need one that's pretty well complete - just tired. Thanks all the same! A fastback Stang and a Cheetah.... nice combo!!!

John - thanks for the info. I'm not planning on making this car a Shleby replica - it's more of "sleeper" look that we're after. Stock/faded looking paint and panels, average interior.... with a 1000+hp twin turbocharged small block/G-Force racing tranny and full floating 9" underneath At $7,500- for the fastbacks, I might start looking at less desirable models. I'll have a look through the newspapers.

Thanks!

Craig

Check the completed auctions on ebay for an idea of pricing for Fastbacks. I've been looking at 67-68's and they run the gamit from 2000 to 20000 depending on condition.

Just remember, if you're doing something with lots of power.....YOU HAVE TO BEEF THOSE CARS UP.

I've seen pictures of cars where people hit the gas on mildly modified cars and the windshield cracked.

Speaking as a previous owner of those cars....wayyyyyyy too much flex.

Not too hard to install 2" x 3" - 1/8th inch wall through the floor sub frame connectors - adds quite a bit of rigidity.
