damn kids in cars

In my part of the world, there are way too many rice burners A.K.A. jap racers and not nearly as many good streetrods, customs and Cobras.

What few cruise ins we have are rarely invaded by the punk crowd.

when I was in Southern Indiana, it was a completely different story. Streetrods were king.....period. I didn't see enough riceburners to wad a shotgun with. Even the kids had some sort of American iron. Even saw a full out sprint car on the street, wing and all.

During the season, Evansville had more cruise ins than anyone could ever hope to attend. Kids there still "drag the gut" on Greenriver Rd., just like we did in the 60's out here on the coast.

Cops just park and watch. Rare for tickets to be given. What a breath of spring!

Evansville (pop. 250,000+)and that general part of the world still have it together for family values, which is why there is very little of the punk mentality. When there is, it is generally "imported" from a big city or one of the coasts.

In the year my son Ray and I spent there, we never did see a single "punk" at any of the local cruise ins. They were just good old fashioned fun. Burgers, shakes and fries 'n hot rods. We saw some of the neatest cars I've ever seen in my life. Many were easily good enough for magazine coverage.

Only a handful of Cobras though.

Just shows that the "punk-ass" mentality isn't everywhere.

Honestly, I really believe it stems from the pace of life of the parents. Too busy or self involved to take time with their kids as they are growing up. Between that and way too many single parent families struggling to survive, the kids lose out on being taught manners, respect for others (and themselves) and plain old self discipline.

In short, they are trying (like all kids) to get the attention they need from moms and dads. When that fails, out comes the negative behavior. Kids will always get attention one way or the other.; They keep trying until they succeed whether it is the right kind or the negative kind. They're products of their environment.

The old saying "Families that play together, stay together" is absolutely true. I proved it myself, watching my kids grow up and observing the kids they ran around with. The happiest, best behaved kids, came from real families with lots of love and caring. The others, the punks and drop-outs, all came from dysfunctional families. Barfly parents, welfare mentalities....you get the picture. Funny thing is, the happiest families are rarely the wealthiest.

Maybe, when the punks show up again, somebody might try taking them under a wing. Probably a tough job getting through the shell, but who knows what that kid could be if given a chance.

Its really funny. Reading some of the other posts I remembered something that I noticed this summer but forgot.

When I drive the Cobra around on the weekends it always gets attention but not by the "Honda" crowd.

But then I noticed that when I drive my Buick Grand National around the "Honda" Crowd tends to disappear. Its similiar to the Mustangs. They don't try to race, they just avoid it. And since the GN also has the capability of high 10's/low 11's its just as well I guess

Bob, that is one thing I have noticed as well. The higher-end cars know what the Cobra is, but the ricers think it is a Miata, and many of them think they will win in a race. One crack of the throttle is usually enough.

I think the import tuner crowd doesn't know their.... from a hole in the ground. I remember one ricer asking if I had a header on my BB chevy, "Nope, I have two" confused the hell outta him, guess he never heard of V-8's He did have a turboed, nitroused, civic that might have run high 13's, I took it easy on him, held second gear forever, got into third then floored it.

Just talked to my buddy that's also got a Grand National. I told him about this thread and he laughed. He told me last week at the Drags (he's 65) he was talking to several of the "ricers" and they were blown away when he turned a 10.20 @ 133 with the boost at 15 lbs. He blew the exhaust elbow when they turned the boost up to 23 so he left but he will be in the 9's next weekend. Best part is its got power windows, air, etc and weighs right at 3600 lbs. Not bad for a 6. I think I may have to go to Nitrous to catch him

Please stay away from the genetics,immigration policies of US and the "jap" cars and other borderline labels.

What started as a "Isn't it a shame a few are ruining it for all," has the potential of turning real ugly real soon, right here in front of your very own eyes.

In the industry I am employed in I am probably affected more than most by those "J*P" cars, but you won't hear me using such slang to describe a race. Consider for a moment,that we may have others in here who may feel uncomfortable by some of the language/ I for one know of one Club Cobra member who happens to be of that ancestry. I don't know how many others may find this offensive.

Please, heed the suggestion we keep this discussion in the center before it goes off the deep end.

It's funny, here in Fresno, most of the different car "groups" tend to get along and respect the host sites--Bob's Big Boy on Blackstone, a Sonic in Clovis, a Fosters Freeze elsewhere. We obviously have everything--even the rock crawlers cruise in packs in their Jeeps, Scouts and 1st Generation Broncos. Course there's some morons--but EVERYONE gets on their case. Do a burnout in the wrong place, and you may be facing hot rodders, rice rocketeers and some nasty lowriders getting on your case all at once. The cops have made it clear--be cool or lose it--as they show up in their DARE car that knocks off passes in the 10s down at Famoso.

I think your right, but J*P? I believe PC is getting out of control. There is NO difference from saying "Brit" or "Aussie" than there is in saying "Jap".

I do agree that "Frog" is kind of demeaning when referring to people from France. IMO, the Frog's are the ones being demeaned though

Our country is a little too "sensitive" when "Jap cars" set off alarm bells.

We where all lucky compared to todays kids. Today everything is slicker,sneakier,don't tell no matter what, and if you get caught LIE about it. This country has been bought and sold to someone else. We just don't know it yet. This is why alot of people have the older cars from a time when everything was simplier and better. My beloved bike nights and cruize ins have all been moved or cancelled because of these rice grinding more money in the stereo than the vehicle kids with some kind of strange looking wings and crap all over them. I guess each generation has them, I just don't like this generations take on hot rodding.
