Pat,
Talk to the local speed shope and such. You will most likely have to start as a go-fer but you will be learning. Once you get your foot in the door so to speak and show that you are serious and will work I think you can find a job that will get you started.
As for excitement in a job just ask Ernie. After all he must hold the record for Blowing up shops, burning cars, & etc. HA !!!! Had to get that in.

At 14 it's going to be a struggle what with labor laws, no transportation, etc. Most businesses won't hire anyone under 16.
When I was a kid my Dad had an AAMCO that I started at when I was 13 or so. Just swabbing the floors, emptying trash, cleaning the offices etc. Not real exciting other than the occasional cool car that came through but I stumbled into my '66 Mustang that way. It came in for a tranny rebuild and the owner never came back for it. I payed my Dad the cost of the parts and to get title on it. $150.00 (1980)

Make sure you've got transportation (or within walking distance) then offer to be a clean-up kid ... empty trash, sweep floors, wash cars. Tell 'em why you want to work and offer to be there for TIPs only ($5/hr tips would be nice).

No Glory
My first job in the automotive field was at a body shop. Two brothers had this really great shop and some street rods that they built. I was pumped!! Turns out one brother restored antique carriages - I spent the summer sanding old wagon wheels down to bare wood by hand. The next jobs were a lot better: I had a Jag owner tip me $5.00 (in the mid 60's) because I tightened his lug nuts with a torque wrench in the correct sequence.
Good luck,
Bill

Try for a local machine shop or custom shop and maybe just cleaning tools and what not for minimum wage. There is tons of knowledge out there and car guys love to talk.
