Tortilla Flat Trip
Great run today. 8 Cobras made it. Mike's lost 10 lbs of oil pressure and My steering changed. I don't need no stinking steering (till next week). Drag racing tomorrow is in a straight line.
Karl gave us all a lesson in burn-out 101. He just missed a Forest Ranger's arrival.

I had a great time out to the Flats - this is such a pretty time of year - cool in the morning and upper 70s in the afternoon -
Karl has a monster car and with the margin that the ranger missed him he has someone looking out for him -
I was surprised that on the way back we were held up by some slow motorcycles - RVs, boats sure, but motorcycles - and than Ron kicked it in gear and jump around them - i never saw him again.
Of course we did have a failure of communication - Mike said it was because of his computer speak - but i am an engineer and i couldn't connect the dots - on the way home i was thinking that Mike was just looking for a nice way to bring up the subject of a new engine for his beast - 10# of oil pressure would do that.

I did notice the connection - and did you also hear Karl say that the wife will be on vacation for the next couple of weeks - when the cat is away -

I think that waitress must have put so loco weed in youse guys coffee. I have no idea what you're talking about. I MAY have lost a LITTLE traction. Must have been some sand on the pavement. I vaguely remember some sort of pickem up truck with lots of pretty colored lights on it, but I, of course, was as always, driving in a safe and sane manner when we passed each other.

Yes,
There was some miscommunication between me and the boys..
They heard I'm down to 10 lbs of pressure instaed of what I said which was I'm down 10 lbs. I was getting high fives and shouts of new engine... Actually I dropped from 50lbs to 40lbs. I'm going to put on a manual gauge to check pressure. If it is OK then I'll change out the gauge then sending unit

Hey guys - I guess I pissed off the people riding the motorcycles. (I watched - they were actually riding them, even if seemed like they were pushing them at that speed.) When they caught up with me at the traffic light, one guy commented that it was a nice day for driving like an a$$hole. I'm sorry if my frustration and subsequent passing of the slowpokes reflects badly on the group.
Personally, I think the 'Adam Henry' is the person who backs up traffic for a slow sight-seeing tour on a curvy road when a line of Cobra's is stacked up behind him. They had lots of chances to pull off and let the faster traffic go by. I guess I should have just pulled over and let them motor on ahead for a half an hour or so...

Sounds like you all had a better time than I did this weekend.
Unfortunately after Laughlin I noticed some gear oil leaking from my Lister. I crawled under it and discovered the tailshaft seal had almost completely backed out and when I removed it there was plenty of tailshaft bushing fragments. After putting 2 and 2 together it is clear that the folks that made my driveshaft made it too short and this basically caused the failure. Driveshaft is in the process of being redone but I am still trying to find a replacement Richmond tailshaft bushing and seal locally with no luck. I also am trying to find a bushing extractor tool so I don't have to pull the engine to fix this. If any of you have any leads let me know.
Unless things start falling into place soon I may not make it out to the Firebird/PASA event next weekend either. |

Need4Speed - I probably have the Ford extension bushing puller in my garage somewhere. Think that would help? I'm in Gilbert near Lindsay & Warner. Also, unemployed right now, so I can probably meet at a time of your convenience to show you what I have.

They were the slowest motorcycles i have every seen on the Trail - I know when someone is holding me up they must be slow - but i blinked and you were gone - not even taillights in the distance.

Thanks Ron - I may take you up on that offer once I locate a bushing. That way I can check to see if it is a close enough fit or not. I will let you know.

It was good meeting you on the run.
As far as passing the slow bikes... No Problem. I heard you but as Jim says never saw you. We have passed many slow vehicles on that road.
Oh, by the way... The bikes were being driven by ladies and not young ones at that.

Mike - My Lister was finished but my driveline had other ideas. As long as I can get the parts I should be able to have it fixed fairly quickly. I have not given up on the Firebird/PASA event this weekend yet...

Ron - I am still tracking down the bushing but was wondering what kind of extension bushing puller you have? Is it made specifically for your transmission or is it universal? A universal one may work but if its just for Ford it will not since the Richmond transmission yoke is essentially a GM TH400. Here is an example of the 2 types of pullers that I have seen if you are not sure:

Bruce - mine would look more like the second example, the Ford tool. Still, that type of puller is not a precise tool... they will cover a small range of sizes. It seems to me that I once used it to pull the bushing from a GM Rock Crusher 4 speed, but my memory is not that clear. It would have been over 20 years ago.
