Battery Fell Out
And so it begins. After 1000 realtively trouble free miles (I did lose a license plate) my battery fell out the bottom of the car. The good news is, now I know where the battery is!;) The bad news is that the tray and hardware are gone. Fortuantely this happened about a mile from my house. I heard a clunk, or at least, I think I heard a clunk, since I had ear plugs in, and when I got the car in the garage, there was a long trail of battery acid. The battery is still hanging there....
Do any of you guys that moved your battery to the trunk have your original kit? I spoke with Gordan and he was very helpful as always. Unfortuantely, he will be out of town all week. Please let me know if any of you have a kit that i could swing by and buy off you. Thanks, Steve |
You did disconnect the thing right? Just because you lost some acid does not mean the Battery is dead. If you have a frayed cable or somehow have the positive lead touching the body things could get exciting.

"Back in the day" the old metal cars with trunk mounted batteries that got rusty would sometimes drop them through. I had an old Austin Healey that did this. But I can't imagine how a battery could drop out of a fiberglass car. Or was it mounted up front off the frame on a rusty bracket or something? Please clarify what happened :eek: :eek:

Nice crowd... You can get a battery box at West Marine to put the thing in... brackets and trays can be bought from the Chinese at Autozone or Napa.. try talking to the guys over at Anthem as well, they do fabrication.. Joe can probably point you to the correct place..

Have Gordon put a couple small Oddesy dry cells batteries down in the noise. that is where mine are and they don't take up half the trunk. Good design.

The battery is supposed to mount under the car just behind the differential. It hangs on four hooks of all-thread type material. I went back to the scene of the crime (train tracks) and found the tray and three of the hooks. Gordon tells me I can get the hooks from the Chinese as Mulv says. I'm curious as to how you are supposed to unhook the battery, since there doesn't seem to be a trap door in the trunk... |

:LOL: I love these 'true confession' threads. First I've heard of a battery falling out the bottom. I hit a tree with my Jeep once (well, several trees over a period of time actually) but this one tree knocked the battery out of place. The hot lead melted on the exhaust manifold, discharging the battery SO fast it 'blew up'. Which took care of the 'short' problem immediatly and stopped the fire hazard. :D

That battery set-up isn't one of FFR's better ideas and most people do something different. For instance mine is installed in a recess on the passenger footbox.
Steven, I have one the plastic marine-style battery boxes that FFR includes with the 3-link. It's your's if you want it. |

That was a problem with some of the older cars. FFR had a fix if you want to keep in in the stock location. What I did.. JB Weld the hooks going into the 3/4 tubing. I then tied all down rods together. This way they will not slip. I also, double nutted the rods after tightening. The mounting plate is just a piece of 1/8 steel. You might post over on FFCobra and see if anybody still has their old setup after switching to a trunk mount. Mike |
This is what I did on my FFR. I cut an access hole in the trunk directly over the recommened batter placement behind the rear end. It is exactly the size of the battery box supplied by FFR. I had to remove the center 3/4" square tube but I replced it with two 3/4" tubes and riveted the box to both the for and aft tubes and the two cross members. I then put the standard tray under the box just to be safe. It also requires a door which you can fab from the piece you cut out of the trunk floor.

WTF! How can a battery just fall out? I ckeck this stuff by looking in the engine compartment each time before I go and when I come back.
I do this everytime since that first time I took it out of the garage. Wifey was sitting there calm trying to hook all the belts so she wouldn't fly out of the car if we had a wreck. I told her it really didn't matter because if someone hits us on the highway we may wish we did not have the seat belt on. Just imagine you in 4 pieces, battery acid all over you, arms and pieces of your head scattered all over the road! What a site. Of course everyone after the wreck would be talking about the engine and how much HP it had or something forgetting we are scattered all over the place etc..... So she unhooked the safety belt. :confused: While I was laughing :LOL: at her, I started :eek: up the car... forgot I had it in gear :eek: and blew though the garage door. She grabbed the dash rail (had this mounted for just this sort of action).... I slammed on the brakes (this car has very good brakes); the trunk hood flew open and smashed her on the head as she was going over the windshield. (This is another reason I keep the hard top on:rolleyes: ) She now wears a helmet!:LOL: Oh, the helmet matches the car color. |
