side pipes
Does anyone in the phoenix area make quieter side pipes? How many decibals is reasonable with some very quiet pipes?
Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hi Scott. I'm sure noone is ignoring your request. It's just we don't know. I'll bet Jeff Classic knows though. He is a walking encyclopedia of car stuff. He'll know where to go for pipes and mufflers too.

Scott,
I am building my own headers and sidepipes right now. I am using dynomax 3" ID bullet mufflers (perforated, not louvered core). I have a flange connection at the collector where I am going to insert car chemistry inserts (really just a huge, power-robbing restriction). I'll use those only when I have to have it quieter.
It will be a while but I can let you know how quiet it is on a 540 BBC when I get it all put back together...

I tried the Car Chemistry inserts on the dyno with my 521. They cost 35 horsepower average.
They only made the car marginally quieter, not as much as I hoped, so I dont use them anymore.

Those are gonna be SUPER loud! Bullets are good for about 2 dBA noise reduction. You'll see.

My car is extremely quiet compared to others I have ridden with, but only at below 3K rpm, at WOT they can hear my car in the next county. The contributing factors to this are fuel injection and racing auger inserts in the exhaust. These inserts don't really rob much horsepower and give appropriate back pressure. I have had many people look at my car and when I start it they are amazed at how quiet it really is, till I get on the loud pedal. The fuel injection does quiet it down, or so I am told, but not sure I would go EFI if I did it again.

James,
Why would you maybe not go EFI again? Performance, originality, other issues?

Probably my biggest complaint is the learning curve on tuning it. Once you get it perfect it should be good, but finding somebody to tune an EFI is a PITA. If you spend the extra money for a Motec or Accel DFI control unit it would be easier to find a resource, but it certainly requires more talent than I have to get it perfect. I think EFI is probably a better technical solution for fuel management, but carb is simple to tune and sounds better, at least on these cars. Dont get me wrong, I am not against it, would just like to try carb on my next car....if I was to go EFI ever again, it would be a Mass-Flow setup.

Tom at Tom's Motorsports in Las Vegas built me a set. Do a search. He also runs them on the CSX spec race cars he maintains. They are tunable too. Run them loud when you want and quiet when you need to.

Scott, Tom's Motorsports has done a bunch of research, so he would be a good bet.

Scott,
When AMP was under the gun for noise restrictions and were running the decibel testing, I got a warning for being on the cut line. I installed Vortex cones at the back of the pipe which cut the noise about 3 db; not much quieter but took the edge off. The car is gone but I still have the cones and you can try them if you want.
