Default Arntz hood shaped for distributor clearance

The earliest photos that I am aware of show the Arntz with the hood protruding into the cowl (as per the shot of Donunder's car below), allowing distributor clearance for Chevy powered cars.

Was this hood design the first option, and then did the shape change to the regular hood shape?

Any idea of which year or sequence the different hood shape was offered?

Is it generally accepted that the regular shape bodies were significantly thinner/lighter bodies?

So many questions!

Thanks,

Well, since nobody replied...

My car has that shape. From what the original owner told me, he bought one of the last Arntz cars made. He raced it for a few years, then took it to Butler and had a complete interior installed. So mine is a bit of a half breed. Considering the Type 4 had this notch, and the very last Type 3 models, I would assume it was near the end of Arntz production. I think if you dig on here, one of the guys stated that Butler had the Type 3 molds without the notch.

I have seen both style hoods on both Artnz and Butlers , that were originally ordered and built with Chevy engines. I think it was an owner choice for access and apearance

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware that Butler also offered the option.

Hi Craig,
When I was doing a bit of research a couple of years ago on importing a cobra to Australia I read somewhere that the last 16 type 4 cars had the kick in the hood.

cheers

Paul

I have never seen a Butler with the notch unless it was a left over Arntz. Butler used the molds from the early Type 3, which did not have the notch.

Mine has the notch, and to the best of my knowledge, it is not a Type 4. It has many of the features of the Type 4, but missing others.

Thanks guys. I'd love to know the differences between each version and the months/years that they transitioned.

Hi Craig,
These are some notes I made while researching Arntz cobras, whether they're right or wrong I don't know. Most if not all the info probably came from posts on this site.

Version 1
Body oblongish fenders and wheel wells.
No steel support or bars in doors
Primative latch and hinges
Simple wheel well liners and interior panels

Version 2
Addressed body shape issues
Front guards aren't identical
Wrap around steel crash bar behind interior pockets.
Stronger cowl brace to stop shake.
Large rectangular door beam that uses a VW latch.
Rear suspension dimensions are different.

Version 3
Used Butler bodies
Frame modified to take a Doug Nash 5 speed.
K member rather than x members

There were some with a mixture of versions
Fan shroud on type 2, 3 and Butlers, but not all cars had them. Usually combined with heat shields on foot boxes.
No difference between Butler and Version 3 Arntz.
Last 16 type 4 cars had the kick in the hood.

104 Butlers were made
Butlers had a 91 inch wheel base
Butler stamped the chassis number on the main rail drivers side between the front suspension and radiator. BRIMMYYZZ
BRI - Butler Racing Inc
MM - Month
ZZZ - Build number

Maybe there is something there that you haven't seen yet. I doubt it though.

That's excellent Paul - thanks!

The body on Dad's car is probably 3 times thicker than mine in areas such as the fender lips. A huge difference!
I wonder if this was the case with all of the "jigsaw piece" bodies?
