Paint before Upholstery?

I was wondering what most guys have done first with their builds. Did you get your upholstery done after or before your paint job? If you did your paint first was anything damaged or scratched by the time the upholstery was completed?

I had my upholstery done first Mando - seats and dash and door panels. They were easily refitted after. Carpeting was done after painting.

I did the same as Merv even to the fitting of the carpet. Then I took it all out, even the seats and shifter lever and had the paint done. That way there was no chance of over spray or paint dust settling on the upholstery. Once the paint was done I put the carpet down with insulation under it, mounted the seats, and put the roll bar back carefully and didn't have a scratch or chip in the paint.

But I have seen people do it the other way and wrap the interior and roll bar with Saran Wrap. That saves the remounting of everything but I still feel the saran wrap can get a hole in it or be moved by someone and then you have the over spray. Also with the seats and everything out, the painter can do a better job on the back and front edges of the body. He even ran my stripes around the curve and painted them about 1" back under the lips.

I had my car painted top and bottom and the stripes applied first. Then I had the trim done. No problems. Went like clockwork and zero risk of overspray. The holes for the roll bars, latches and anything else were made before the paint was applied so there was no chance of anything being scratched or damaged later.

Mando, I am sure you know this, but make sure u make all the holes a little extra wide to allow for the thickness of the filler and paints

Thanks Merv, most of the holes were fine but I still got caught out on a few! I didn't realize paint was so thick.
