Oxygen sensors
My windsor came without the 2 oxy sensors, only plugs on the wiring loom.
Can i whip down to the wreckers and plug in any 4 wire sensor or do i need the original Ford 302 Mustang jobbies to talk to the ecu properly?

I think the sensors varied over time with the number of wires from plug to sensor, so I'd guess if you can match the number of wires and find a plug that matches it should work.
This comment is based on my observations when I went searching for a replacement plug on my AU XR8 motor as compared to 6 cylinder AU's I was scavenging. Did find the right plug though.

My loom was cut/rehashed by Michael at Warwick Harrisons' who now has moved on. He left 2 x 4 pin plugs marked oxy sensors, i guess that these are not originals so matching them up with something here prob isn't the solution.
Merv, there's 4 wires leading leading into each plug so is that what you mean by a 4 wire sytem?
Maybe US ebay may be the solution or Summit
I did call Warwick, he wasn't sure and suggested try a Ford sensor but at $150 each it'd be nice to know if they'd be the correct ones.

There is not a great deal of difference between oxygen sensors. The main difference is wide band or narrowband (wide band cost a lot more and gives much more accurate readings) and whether they work off voltage or resistance. I used to have a Nissan that had an 02 sensor that worked off resistance instead of voltage. That is fairly rare but it confused me when i was trying to install an A/F ratio guage. The reason you get different numbers of wires is basically to do with internal heaters and sheilding.
If i were you i would just go to the wrecker and find something that fits. When you get the engine running you will know if the o2 sensor works because the computer will tell you. Also most computers will run with the o2 sensor not working, they do this in different ways such as some will run in limp mode, some will revert to default values and some will just go off other sensors. Once its running you can go from there.
This is just my thoughts, I have no experience with Fords.

There are self heating and non heating too.
LS engines use the self heating units, not sure about Fords though.

I have the same set up as you. I purchased these from Cheapa Spares at Oxenford for $90 each. They are a three wire heated and come with plugs that go straight into the harness that came with the engine.

I had the Oxygen sensor harness in tact and the plugs had three wires to them. I bought two sensors from Autobarn for $157.98. They were ACA brand and Part Number OX207 and plugged straight into the Mustang harness. They appear to work OK, but as Zedn points out - would I really know??!?!

Ahhhhhh just looked up my pin out and there's 3 wires on it, so off i went to the shed......guess what 3 wires! What was i smokin
So thanks for all the help, I'll grab a couple of generic 3 wire sensors, whack on a plug that matches and hope for the best.
panavia, I believe the loom is from a 1993, so according to my info from various sources the fact that there's 3 wires confirms this? Is it correct that from '94 they had 4 wires?

I thought there would be three - and yes they do get hot! I suspect the 302 would run just fine without them as well. I got the ones that Geof did.

There are heaps of different O2 sensors round... otherwise when you would go to buy them they would just ask how many wires and thats it... so you will need the correct one for the ECU in question. They are calibrated for it specifically.
Also why are you going to grab secondhand wrecker jobs????? get some new ones as they are not that expensive and 99% of the time the wreckers ones will be F$#%$%# because they have been sitting outside corroding.
If you were to get secondhand ones that are faulty then your car may run super rich or lean and could hurt the engine or you will end up complaining that you are using alot of fuel... why skimp on these things, i am sure that you havent skimped on the rest of the car?

we have found any new part from ford is a rip off
if they were holden oxyegn sensors we can get them dirt cheap

If you need to pass an emissions test it would be good to get new ones. Or at the very least, weld an extra bung on both sides of the exhaust and verify with a quality wide band O2 sensor that they are working properly.

Don't know what the exchange rate and availability is for items from "up here" for you folks "down under" but here is a reference to the standard O2 sensors that are compatible with Ford's system using the A9L EEC.

Thanks for all the replies here, i'm finalising wiring at the moment and keep moving from one bit to another....lost track of this post!
Advise noted on new v's used ones, although no emmissions test necessary.
With the $ good at the moment I'll get them from the US.
Can you believe i get freight here to coastal nsw faster from the USA than interstate. 7 days from Melbourne and 5 from California......come on Auspost
