The whole license fee is a bit of a furfey. Gav and I bought HP Tuners and the regular versions work on buying credits to be able to tune each ECU. EFI Live has a licence per ECU system wich is about $100 per go (You can check all this on their web pages) This system is aimed at hobbyist like us that want to tune one or two cars here and there.

There is a Commercial version that the tuners should/usually buy. It's a bit more expensive but it does away with the whole license /credit thing and they can tune as many ECUs as they like. So if they are charging you a license fee it's something they've made up to justify the cost of buying the original software.

That being said, If the tuner has started out with the basic version of the software like Gav and me and then bought licenses each time they tuned, well it gets to a point where the software writers (HP and EFI live) usually will give them credits for all those license purchases towards upgrading to the commercial version.

I wired mine up myself and while there were a few tricks and traps it wasn't that hard. But I'm experience in wiring and electronics with my work. To many it's a bit of a black art.

My mail order tune was done by Bobby Brown in Perth. He did a fantastic job and is a real nice guy too. He's sorted out several of they guy's Gen3s on here.

Cheers

Are you for real, if I am not mistaken wasn't it some of these cobra people who gave you a start on your own.

So you are going arround telling others in your industry how bad we are as a community!

Do I assume that if i need the services of these "specialized shop owners who agree with me" I can expect to pay a premium!

IMO Baz was ripped off!

Default What are you guys on???

Seriously guys, have I stumbled across a teenage girls forum???

Why does everybody on the edges have to attack somebody for explaining the situation?

I think we can all learn something from this thread.
1. Make sure you know what you are paying for
2 If you don't know, make sure you find out PRIOR to getting the item/service
3 Don't explain your side of the story on a public forum with only half of the facts
4 don't just weigh in on a thread to attack just because you can...It is embarrassing

i totally agree
i prob should have said it in using tamer words
but basically i do not think anyone should air their dirty laundry on forums
because then u get people replying without knowing full story
using the word ripped off made the tuner sound like a theif which i know
he would not even hurt a mouse

then u had others saying u got screwed even i used that word without knowing the full story
anyway im at fault and many others are at faulty here so i think from now one anyone wiith probs just go back to where u had stuff done and talk to them politely even it it has cost u heaps of money just keep it off the internet
otherwise everyone including me gets bad publicity and no one will use me for work
and no one will want to do work for you

I have an EFI Live commercial unit, it had an issue (usb receptacle not soldered from factory). It was well out of warranty but unused in most respects as I didn't have everything else in place sensor wise, fuel supply etc. The guys at EFI Live sorted me right out with a replacement unit with full warranty.
Now the time has come to hook it up for real and check for spark etc but OOP's. No spark. So... the ECU has gone to someone smarter than me to get checked out for ID 10 T errors. I emailed EFI Live and asked if I would need to commit another licence to the ECU when it has been reflashed or the VIN changed, here is the response.

Hi Gary,

EFILive does license against the serial number of the ECM/TCM controller and not the VIN. If you get the same controller back and the serial number is the same you will not need to allocate another license to continue tuning.

Regards,
insert name here
EFILive Limited

I can't bag the guys making, selling and supporting the tool at all. :-)
