Where did you get your engine?

Hi everyone.

Just curious where everyone got there engines from? Ideally I would like a motor/gearbox/ecu/loom combo out of something, but aside from ebay, where do we think is a good place to go for this?

Or if you went the crate motor route, how much extra stuff did you need to get to make it a goer?

Thanks

OZVENOM 10-18-2010 09:16 PM

Well.

A lot depends on what engine you plan on using and what emissions you have to comply with. The easiest way to get a compliant engine is buy a late model wreck from the auctions and use as much of the factory parts as you can .
but if emissions are not a problem then a crate engine from the states is good value at the moment.but you still have to get it running with all the accessories. plus a flywheel clutch gearbox and the list goes on.

Jethrow there was a gentleman in Perth just recently selling a 2008 shelby mustang 500 motor and drivetrain and everything that is needed to fit it to a cobra he also had a factory five kit.I still have his number so Pm me if interested oh and congratulations on the new project. If I lived in the States I would have a factory five car and take my time building it,I could not think of a better hobbie. Are you thinking ford or Chevy? My engine is still in transit from the States.

Jethrow 10-20-2010 03:28 AM

This is where the polarisation might start but I am thinking to go chevy.

Aside from being a Holden guy, I do think the LSx series of engines are very good, and as a bonus not so physically phat as the Fords.

Besides, we all know Shelby really wanted to use the Chevs .....

Tenrocca 10-20-2010 03:29 AM

new L76 engine from Holmart = $4500 (as they started to run out the prices went up a bit)
new T56 from Holmart = $2500
Stock Loom = $300 (holden)
Alternator = $150 (ebay)
Starter = $100 (ebay)
Dipstick, various bolts, belt, tensioner = $200
O2 sensors = $100 (rock auto USA)
ECU = $100 from ebay USA
Tune = traded a spare ECU for a tune
Connectors etc to convert loom to stand alone = $150
BandM shifter for mid shift conversion $250

So that about $8500 all up. The extras do add up, but if your prepared to tackle stuff like wiring yourself you can save some dollars. :)

wow - thx Tenroca!

I went to a buddy of ours that has built engines for us in the past. He is not a full time engine builder - but only builds for those he wants to build for. He built my 390FE, installed everything south of the engine (bell houseing, clutch, transmission) then delivered it. The engine was one of his that he had in storage.

Motor Wreckers - engine & trans $4800

Beejay 10-20-2010 02:33 PM

There will be even more cheap wrecks coming up with NSW bringing in new laws to stop rebirthing.

I bought my LS1 a few years ago on ebay for $4200 delivered. 10,000km. Included all accessories, airbox, exhaust, loom, sensors, ECU and fly by wire pedal.
Then bought a T56 from ebay for $550, about $1K was spent rebuilding it to new though.

Cheers,

Ben

In my opinion if you have the room to buy and store a wreck, then this is a beter option.
You know for a fact you have all you need.
Just make sure you have a good look at anything that may be damaged after accident.
If rear ended check back of gearbox incase tailshaft pushed in.

Wrecked vehicle 50,000 Klms

Stock LS1, T56, ECU, Engine Loom, Power Steering pump, AC (didnt use), all up 6200.

Started first pop, never missed a beat, doesnt use oil or water.

Got 3 month warranty from wrecker - didnt get goign for 6 months so not applicable.

Getting all the engine accessories helps a lot to reduce cost.

Crate engines seemed to be scarce when I was looking.

Thx for the comments guys. I am thinking to find a wrecked vehicle could be the go. Over here in WA I think we can use any suitable engine that complies with 1999 level emmisions or better. So for the chevy's I could go the 5.7L route, but then again the 6.0L is a bit newer.

I have a 285 kW 5.7 in my HSV clubsport and am very happy with it, so am tempted to go that way and find something similar. 285 kW is enough power right?

boxhead 10-21-2010 06:31 AM

It will be for a while, then you will want more, then more, then more :)

Merv and Sharon 10-21-2010 07:32 AM

Jethrow it kind of depends on the balance of the power with chassis and the car's handling and grip. The original Cobras would not have had that much power I suspect. The overall package is the real achievement and if it does the job that you want.

I'd humbly suggest that 285KW is more than enough... :)

If you are happy with it in a clubbie, then image your clubbie on a diet.
Probably be enough power to spin the wheels in 3rd.**)**)**)

The experts can correct me if I'm wrong, I've only seen what's been posted on this forum, but if you look at the results from Nationals gone past - Big KWs doesn't equate to a faster car. Plenty of BIG hp cars running the same times as those with less.

If you want bragging rights however, that's another story.

Regards,
Anth

Sure is for me. I am constantly reminded when I put my foot down of how much I need to respect the power to weight ratio of these vehicles.

It's probably more of a case of how you get the power down than how much...
