Seat belt type
Im about to buy my seat belts. I was planning to get Klippan ordered through Autobarn part number K6262.
Do people typically use off the shelf belts in cobras or is a custom made belt required?
Am i correct in thinking the only consideration is the height of the buckle stalk so it sits at the hip of the occupant and also the orientation of the retractor (vertical, horizontal etc). Does length of belt require any special consideration in a cobra?
I have made up a bracket to mount the retractor sitting horizontal in the boot.

In my Harrison the bracket for the retractor is near the floor and the retractor mounted vertically as the belt goes up to the shoulder loop ring?? It is a Klippan K7628. Standard length of 3.2 M. You could probably go to the short version, 2.6M. The buckle stalk is 250mm and sits at my hip at door sill level, (MX5 seats)Seems just about perfect. I got mine from Repco for $188.00 the pair.My engineer just checked the Tag on the belts, no worries.

Same here and the engineer made sure that I had the original white tags on and the additional ones that I was required to sew on saying that, "this vehicle has not been tested for full frontal impact ...etc". I and I hope it wont be!
No harness allowed in Qld as they don't retract.

What was the age limit? 3 years? Some i saw at the shop were made in 03!

Mine were made in 10/07 it seems and were compliant with AS ... 2590
I bought them in 2009.

I was going to get Klippan belts for Nemo but they quoted 8 weeks and lots of beer tokens, finished getting custom made from Hemco ( Aus made ) delivered in less than a week for about $150 the pair. |
I forgot to ask you last week about the age. Did your engineer require them to be under a certain age?
Also, did you get custom length for Nemo?

Age isn't an issue because they were made to order but being the horizontal shelf mount type were just the standard short length.
I wouldn't stuff around with 2nd hand anything to do with safety.
ps. I have belts and harness both mounted in the car, Porker GT3 is delivered this way so there is precedent but the belts clip out if they whinge. |
Yes, i would never use second hand seat belts. I have heard it is illegal for wreckers to sell them but that could be wrong.
For some reason i thought they could not be older than a certain number of years i.e shelf life.

I have used hemco for some custom belts on another project.
Excellent turn arround and price. No issue with the product, engineer happy with the product and signed them off.

What info do Hemco require, are klippan part numbers okay and just ask for the equivalant or do they require lengths and mounting details etc.
The CR belts mount horizontally on an existing chassis bracket in the boot which is part of the roll bar frame.

The length is the main issue in most Cobras due to the mounting position being so close to the seats. When fully retracted they tend to sit loose as the retractor can't retract any more belt.
I've had a Cobra with shorter belts and it really made a difference.
Custom belt colours could be a good option as well depending on your interior colour choice.

With the CR, Ian supplies a clippan part number.
That what I have and most CR owner have the same.

Sorry Strida can't help with the part No.s, I just ordered the Klippans from the local Peps at Engadine and when the delivery was going to be dire they rang me and asked if the Hemco equivilent was acceptable and sourced accordingly.
From memory Hemco are in Albury, I rang them about the sew on labels that the RTA demand hoping they would tell me not to but they were aware of the requirement and advised I take then to a upholsterer or boot maker to get them stitched on. $12 job done. |

I'm amazed you are allowed to stitch anything on to seat belts without getting them re certified. I would have thought the process of stitching puts a perforated line on the belts.........
As mentioned above there are several cars that are equipped with both types of belts so I wouldn't see that as being an issue as long as the mounts are compliant. You may also be able to apply for exemptions to the ADR to be able to run just the harnesses.

Hi Strida,
Part number for Hemco belts is 1780003 and my stem is 250 long from top to bottom to suit my seats. Pics in gallery.

With regards to time to have them made, I ordered my Klippan thru Repco on the 8th August last year, picked them up on the 20th August.

QLD Transport has now specified that the labels are not to be stitched into the belts, they are now to be made as a sleeve that slides on the belt. |
