current Classic Revival has <51cm available

A 2008-current Mini Cooper is about 53cm - I've been looking at all sorts of potential donors, so far nothing has fit. Haven't looked at a current MX5 yet...

Have been working on suitable classic styled Cobra seats, but it's very difficult to come up with a cosmetically appealing seat with the height requirements of ADR 3/03 etc. You can't run an original size Cobra seat and fit a tall headrest to comply like you could previously.

Are there no donor seats small enough now? In the old days we took a tape measure to all the small sports car seats and that's how we found the old MX5 ones. RX7 seats also just squeezed in there. Is there anything current that runs very small seats?

Yes it is a pity we can't do that anymore. I was lucky enough to get through with that system. The very high back full seat is the one jarring difference between 'modern' Cobras and the traditional form.

Mini seats are actually a nice looking seat, shame about that.

The current MX5 seats could be too bulky now the car has grown up.

Not trying to sound facetious, but I have to ask why not? I'm on my phone and don't know the ADR by heart so I'm interested to know how you fall foul. If ts strength wouldn't testing clear that?

Cheers,

maximum gap between headrest at any adjustment position and top of seat is 60mm (from memory)

Aha!

I have an idea, will sketch it up tomorrow and post it to see how we go.

Treeve,

Note that Craig also says 'Cosmetic' :D

Treeve 01-29-2012 01:45 AM

Believe me, having a 500mm headrest wouldn't be great cosmetically, but it would do the job... :)

Not sure if its anything like what your thinking, but I had an idea about a seat (I have about one idea per decade - most are $hit). Basically your typical cobra style seat with a very large (removable) headrest that when installed looks to be part of the seat. Did a crappy sketch a while back - rest would need to be higher of course:

Although it is in the UK, you want something like this, DAX make a removal headrest for their seats

Warren - that's exactly what I was thinking. My god they are ugly though.

I was thinking the same. They look like two surfboards in a Cobra. Are there transparent seats?

...or tombstones!

Makes me think of the ghosts from PAC-man....!

Ugly, but does the job. I'd prefer a normal seat I think.

I'm also looking into seats as one of the last hurdles to pass engineering. I just spoke to Tony at Classic and Sports Auto Interiors here in Melbourne. He does a traditional looking Cobra seat in leather for $2200 including rails. Options for adjustable lumbar (gas pump up) and seat warmers with two heat settings. I'm hoping to check them out tomorrow.

Enkelman's apparently allow these through with an extension on the headrest mounts in order to meet the 850mm rule.

They look a very nice seat Paul and the black leather suits perfectly.

Modena 05-31-2012 11:02 PM

Paul, I have been thinking of those seats too. I suppose it was Classic Auto Interiors that told you Enkelmans willl let those seats through? They told me the same thing. Just last week I asked Bernie this exact question regarding these exact seats, and he was clear, ADR approval paperwork from the manufacturer is required. Regardless of what a supplier tells, be sure you and your engineer are on the same page before buying anything!

I'm not trying to put you off these seats, as long as approval paperwork is supplied then I will likely be getting these too.

sambo 06-01-2012 12:23 AM

Ben, my engineer (not Enkelman) hasn't said yes either - but I'll definitely be confirming.

Bod 06-02-2012 05:55 PM

Sambo
Is the height rule 850m or 800 as in 5.5.2. I hope your wrong as my seats have just been completed to 800
Jeff
