ADR 3/03 seats

Has anyone had any luck finding some inexpensive ADR 3/03 approved seats? Can be butt ugly as long as they have the right tag. :)

Modena 01-24-2012 11:15 PM

easy to find cheapish seats that are 3/03 approved. Not easy to find some that fit.

Also don't forgot about ADR 22/00 - Head Restraints

Tenrocca 01-25-2012 01:22 AM

True Ben - not a lot of room

Looking at something like this perhaps:

http://www.shopsaas.com/images/mach2_blueFront.jpg

But this particular one only has adr 3/02.

In fact looking at the saas website all seats only meet adr 3/02.

Autotechnica A2011 is narrow;

There are very few aftermarket seats that have been tested to 3/03. Try arrow or whitepointer from the clubby world. They are narrow enough and im pretty sure they are compliant.

Check with Treeve what is required. If we are on VSB14 then 3/02 should be acceptable as that is all it asks for.

Tenrocca 01-25-2012 03:47 AM

Liam - I spoke briefly with Treeve on the fly today - so he might jump in and clarify. I had a quick flick through vsb14 and from what I can see it refers to "ADR 3/...", which Im assuming means the relevant adr for the year of vehicle manufacture - so for new vehicles will be 3/03.

Cheers

Treeve 01-25-2012 10:49 AM

G'day gents,

On the most recent Signatory Information Bulletin it requires seats to be ADR 3/03. This same document clarifies that ICV's are also only required to meet ADR 10/01 and 37/01 for steering columns and emissions (tested to IM240).

Cheers,

Treeve

Thanks for clarifying Treeve,

Andrew give these guys a call and ask them.

Welcome to the Frontpage

The seats shown on the site dont comply but from memory there was a clubby that passed with some of their seats. I think Suthol has Arrow seats that also comply.

Mando 01-25-2012 11:09 PM

Tenrocca, I have a couple of legal seats originally from a Japanese car to get through rego. They belong to some one else on Cub Cobra and if I remember correctly he may want to sell them. In the end I used Robnell seat I had purchased. Let me know if you want me to take some pictures and contact the owner.

Regards.

Tenrocca 01-26-2012 03:12 AM

Thanks Liam - I did a bit of looking on ozclubbies and whitepointer will be the first one I try. There was at least 3-4 threads on seats.

Mando - do you know what car they were off - might be easier to try and source locally if I know what I am looking for (ie - something that fits)

I spoke to Autotecnica, none of their seats are ADR 3/03 approved, only 3/02. They also said they have no plans at this stage to update to 3/03, go figure.

The Whitepointer ones look like a good option. Attached is a pic of some upholstered (they only come as plain fibreglass shells) which a guy is putting in a Clubby

You did better than me - I spoke to the tech guy at autotecnica and he had no idea what was the current ADR - then asked me to call him back and let him know what I could find out about it. WTF.

Call him back and tell him lots of crap. Like the seats must have cup holders on the inside pad. Or the seats must have wrap around headrests with helmet restraint connectors. He's supposed to be a tech expert...sounds like the shop owners girlfriends brother !

Outwest34au 01-27-2012 02:41 AM

Tony and the guys at Autotecnica are pretty good to deal with in my private and work related calls for bits.
I got sent a pic of a lovely wooden wheel for cobra type cars and when I asked to get one was told it wasnt ADR and he probably wouldnt bother with it due to the costs involved. There has been speak here before about ICVs and the pain manufacturers feel and have to pass on, so sometimes you just maintain the product range and market you already have without hiring an in house lawyer to keep abreast of the rules.
I'm sure as demand dictates the need there will be aftermarket seats more readily available.

What is the exact difference between 3/02 and 3/03, does that mean my current unused seats are only suitable for the work car now?

good question

Here are the two if anyone wants to filter through it;

ADR 3/03

ADR 3/02

3/02 seats would only be able to be used in cars complianced before 7th Feb 2007 (3/03 release date).

I have just had an initial inspection by the RTA and been given a bit of homework to do, most of which was my stupid fault.

Headlights not aligned correctly, leak in extractors near head ( blown manifold gasket at No.1 ) field of view for the front indicators etc.

The main reason for responding though was to say that my Arrow seats weren't questioned.

The test report for the seat was provided in my engineers report along with FEA for the seat mounts and seatbelt anchor points

Modena 01-27-2012 04:32 AM

do you have pics of these Arrow seats? And a link to supplier?

Outwest34au 01-28-2012 01:59 AM

When my exhaust was fitted the guy had a basic fibreglass shell with a basic frame screwed to the backrest that accepted a headrest, it was totally unupholstered. I asked about it and mentioned ADR talk and he said it was "older" ADR approved.
A seat shell is a pretty basic thing if its made from fibreglass/ carbon fibre or even a pressed metal shell or tube frame.
The critical measurements are given, so theoretically it would be easy to make something to spec and then get it upholstered.
Apart from the probably frustrating wait and dealing with gov depts what would be the cost to get say... a well made glass shell compliant if fixed back, no tilt, not designed to be used where luggage protection is required etc?

Treeve 01-28-2012 02:14 AM

Got just that happening right now, courtesy of a mate in the UK who is handy with fibre work and has access to the right gear. Looking to get them ADR approved for the clubbie scene as he sees a gap in the market. Shouldn't be too tough at the end of the day.

I've recently been wondering where the ADR 3/03 seats are to suit cobras, in the original bucket style with tall headrests, so we get what we want... There's a hole in the market which needs filling!

We have our own modern sports seats for our enclosed cars like GT40 etc, certified to ADR 3/03.

Have been working on suitable classic styled Cobra seats, but it's very difficult to come up with a cosmetically appealing seat with the height requirements of ADR 3/03 etc. You can't run an original size Cobra seat and fit a tall headrest to comply like you could previously.

Are there no donor seats small enough now? In the old days we took a tape measure to all the small sports car seats and that's how we found the old MX5 ones. RX7 seats also just squeezed in there. Is there anything current that runs very small seats?
