SS Commodore Fuel Usage

Hey all I am looking at updating my car and an SS wagon is a possabilty but I am wondering if anyone out there knows what sort of milage is possible for both city and highway driving. No doubt it will make a good tow car and will be a bit more fun to drive than the lesser SV6 for those moments the right foot starts to make it's way to the floor. The manufacturers figures never seem to be accurate so this might be the better way to find out.

My Daily drive is a E3 GTS with a LS3. I average 15 - 16 I/100. Most of my driving is from home to the Melbourne CBD. I hope that helps?

Yep I had one, only just sold it. Good car for towing, only has a 2100kg rating, although I did tow my new 2.5 metre high 2800kg trailer to Winton (Vic) and back from Brisbane. Only set back was fuel economy.... 25 litres per 100k at 110k. To be fair at the time the trailer had no nose cone so it was hitting a 2.5 metre high wall.
I have since put the same motor into a 2007 Rodeo and it has a towing capacity of 3 ton so it tows it a lot better.
The biggest problem is you can't get light truck tyres in a 275 x 19... So I chewed a set of tyres in a trip from Brisbane to Goulburn and return and then Winton (Vic) return. Just because of the load on the rear. Every time I stopped at a servo (every 250k) to get fuel there was a build up of tiny rubber balls on the spokes of the rims.....
I used it mainly to drive from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast and back on the highway, I did see 7.0 litres (photo attached) at 100k with the AFM but generally around the low 10 l / 100k. It would use a little more around town, depending on the state of your right foot.....
Don't get too noisy an exhaust as they drone...... particularly if you don't get the AFM turned off.... 3.0 litre 4 cyl thru twin 3.0 inch pipes.....
They are a great car, I only sold it because I do around 60,000k a year and it had 110,000k on it and it was illegal to tow my new trailer....
When I was towing the old (smaller ) trailer it used to get around the 18 l /100k, that trailer weighed around the 2100kg...

I do combo of highway and City driving. Fuel is about 14.5 to 15.5 per litre on 95 and about 15-16 per litre on E85 (which is 20 cents per litre cheaper than ULP)

Its stock at the moment besides an exhaust, but Im getting a Mafless tune and OTR soon so it should drop to around 12-13L/100 after its tuned.

By the way, when it went in for service I had a SV6 ute as a loaner. What a piece of crap compared to the SSV. Couldnt wait to get out of it.

Btw. I get more people stopping me and commenting on my rims than when my HSV was new. The old school just loooove the dish!

Thank's for your help guys and I do love the dish on those rims looks the better than any wheel I have seen before in little old Adelaide.

Towmaster also your old wagon looked great and I would guess you would rotate through cars every couple of years when you do that sort of milage.

Well this has given me a realy good idea of real world feed back and from this it looks like I should expect between 14-16 ltrs per hundred for city driving with economy in mind i think. The towing consumption was around what i expected and this is similar to me whipping the old 3.6 ltr omega wagon with a furniture box trailer and that was about 22ltrs at 90 to 100 Kmph depending on wind direction and any hill would bring me down to 70 kmph.

Also on some of the blogs I have read it looks like auto and manual vary in consumption a bit and some auto's have got better consumption than the manuals. i have found on guy localy I know and he averages 17 to 18 ltrs with about 50% city and country with a manual ute. ( he loves the V8 sound so his shift points are a bit higher up the rev range than most I would think)

I am looking at an auto and being a rep I travel 70% city and 30% country and need to also fit with the company rules with the new car so this has helped

Autos will have a better fuel economy due to AFM. And the rims are called DTS Shine if interested.

Especially with 275 boots!
