Default Dollars no object, apparently.

Can you believe this?

CSX 3045 sells for over two million USD!!

RM Auctions Arizona 2013 - Auction Report

Has the world gone crazy? I'm into the lore and the history and the heritage of the original Cobras as much as anyone else on this site, but seriously, take a look through Classic and Sports Car magazine and just see what a mouth-watering collection of ultra-desirable pieces of automotive sports and racing history your two mill would put in your garage.

(And you'd reckon for that sort of money they could have thrown on a set of Avons or Billboards or even some old-style Dunlop racing rubber, not daggy old T/As.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, the GT40 that didn't sell was Bowden's?

Perhaps we're seeing the knock-on effect of the great man's passing last year?

This car had significant influence on the replica cobra market.
Contemporary Classic cobras, renowned for their accuracy, were splashed from CSX3045, owned by the company's owner at the time, and in turn, Superformance bodies were splashed from a Contemporary.

Well it's certainly special to you then Tengu.
You can brag that your car is a direct descendant of a multi million dollar ancestor. Very cool. You really have to bring your car up here and come to one of our breakfasts (first Sunday of the month) so we can see it in the flesh. It looks absolutely sensational in photos.

I wonder what's going to become of CSX3045 now? Reading through some of the other cars' histories it appears that they are mainly kept for a short time only, and then traded at auction again. I wonder if that's the American way? It would appear to differ from the Europeans who often tend to keep a car "in the family" for generations.

I worked too hard to get my Cobra and it does have a great deal of sentimental value. Mine is not for sale and probably won't be as long as I have a drivers license. Not that it has some outrageous cash value (which it doesn't compared to the prices we see at these auctions) but it represents a journey and it is not over just yet! Let those that can bid up the real stuff and be as fickel as they like. It's all good.

Can someone explain to the uninitiated why the price discrepancy between this Cobra and the one sold as Lot #150? Thanks.

Well said Chois! My thoughts exactly...... Let those that can afford it have at it. It’s good thing for us simple folk and our love of the Cobra.

Thanks Don, I'll claim that
I'd love to head up that way at some stage...will have to get a top for the car before I venture too far from home.
For her 30th birthday, I've splashed out on a nice 427 side oiler, it should be heading to Aus in a couple of days.
Regarding turnover of original cobras, I was quite surprised that CSX3045 has had so many owners. I also find it interesting when reading their histories, that they have so many restorations over their lifetime. With some of them I wonder how much "original" is left.

Lot #150 didn't sell. High bid was $710,000 but obviously this was not enough for the seller to part with it. IIIRC the pre-auction estimate for this car was above $1 million, and wasn't that far below the estimate for 3045.

It's a mystery to me why 3045 sold for such a high price. It's a nice car, for sure, but... I guess this is what happens when you have several bidders who really want a particular car.
