Sambo mine was black and polished still looked like crap next to painted one.In my opinion paint is the only option you won't regret it

David Hodgson 03-07-2013 07:47 PM

Sambo, I filed down the seams, buffed mine with non silicone cutting compound and stuck some vynil stripes on. It was that shiney that people thought it was actually painted. The seams and some inclusion repairs gave it away though.

The gel coat is actually grey though it has taken on a blue hue in this pic.

Looks pretty darn good from where I sit :)

Aussie Mike 03-17-2013 09:11 PM

Looks great Kimbo.

Where did they end up putting the joins? are they very noticable? How did they go with the complex curves around the back of the car?

Cheers

Kimbo 03-17-2013 09:50 PM

The guys I used had never wrapped anything like this before , the closest they had done in the past was a PT Cruiser. They found both the Cobra and PT Cruiser to be a real challange, a lot of thought has to go into where you start to lay a panel and where the vinyl needs to be stretched.

We did no preparation to the body at all and all of the seams are still visible. Because of this, we decided to mainly follow the seams in the fibreglass with the joins in the vinyl.
You only really notice the vinyl joins if you are looking for them.

Looks great Kimbo.
How heat resistant is this stuff. I noticed you have live pipes and couldn't help wondering whether it is likely to be an issue where they exit the body.

Gav 03-17-2013 10:42 PM

Wow, looks great Kim

Kimbo 03-17-2013 10:57 PM

Not real sure about the heat resistance in practice. I know when you are applying it and resetting the memory, you need to heat it over 90 degrees.
Apparently once on the panel, it is good up to around 200 degrees.
The exhaust seems to be at it's hotest when on the track so I guess we will be testing this at Shelbyfest :D

Beejay 03-17-2013 11:11 PM

That looks great Kim!

Good luck at Shelbyfest.

Looks great, look forward to seeing it on Saturday at Winton

Paul, I agree with Benny. Get yourself down to The Healey Factory and have a look at the "Portifino Blue" (pretty damned close) cars. You will soon forget about tempory paint

Kim - That looks great. Very impressive.

I put vinyl stripes on the cement truck for a bit of a change.

The red pit stripes will probably go as they have had a mixed response (mostly negative) but I do kind of like them. The hardest bit for me as an amateur was the boot lid stripes - took about 3 goes at getting it right, but I just used some cheap stuff from Ebay as I didnt want to spend a lot not knowing if I would like it.

Not shown in the pic are my new plates - did I mention Im registered :)

Dougie, I'm all for proper paint but the car is going to be a patchwork for the next 12 months while I save - hence looking into a temporary finish.

Thanks I'll check out the Healey factory.

The stripes look good Andrew but I've never been a fan of pit stripes. I just reckon they brake up the nice flowing lines of the car.

Tested the car out at Shelbyfest :D

No issues at all with the heat effecting the vinyl around the exhaust pipes - looks fine.

We will get a chance to test this out again at the NSW Championships this weekend.;)

Pit stripes are a good conversation thing for the uninformed.. If you like em...keep em. Stuff everyone elses' opinion.

Treeve 04-04-2013 05:46 AM

I really like them, and I think they add to your car.

Plus they hide some of the brush marks from when you painted it... :D

But seriously, I think you should do what you want. Otherwise we'd all be driving blue with white stripes. Which brings me to my next thought; does anyone have any pictures of a British Racing Green Cobra? I've never seen one, and it's piqued my curiosity.

Treeve,

It's a dusty slab side but it's BRG.
