I am looking at buying a Roadcraft SRV8 and want to register it in QLD
is there any major probs with this car in OZ
I am new to this but would like to get a cobra up and running as have retired from building race cars and need some thing to keep me busy in the shed

I would strongly suggest you talk to an engineer in the state you hope to register it and find out what is required to get the car on the road.

At the very least you will probably need torsion and beaming tests on the chassis and check the side impact protection (intrusion bars) in the doors plus an emissions compliant motor.

Have a look at a few of the past threads regarding imports I think it will answer your question.
An imported second hand car will cause all sorts of headaches!!!

Why do you say that Baz? What's so bad about this car for the price?

From the pics the chassis looks farly substantial and it has Jag front and rear. It looks like all the bright work and other stuff that adds up is there.

I agree with Mike,

Actually looks like a pretty good deal. Main thing is to check chassis either has or will pass the Australian torsion and beaming test. It's not a show stopper if it hasn't been tested as the test won't be that dear, but you want to know it passes. The seller says he has info on the chassis so get a copy of whatever paperwork he has and show it to a qld engineer. If the answers yes on the chassis I would go for it.

- plenty of owners can then comment, but if I remember correctly it has passed the european TUV test, if thats any use.

For the Victorian blokes, who is the older gent that runs out of Geelong, I'm sure his car in black or dark blue is an early southern roadcraft.

That's not a bad looking car at all that I recall.

Garry the best advice is to get an engineer's feedback, as at the end of the day they are the one's that have to confirm the car meets ADR's and hence will pass the necessary rules in your State to be registered for road use.

I agree with most of the comments.

Torsional Beam Test should cost in the vicinity of $1200 based on a number obtained several years back for a four page report as I was going to buy a kit on ebay.

Engineers charge in the vicinity of $250 per hour

Exhaust and emissions tests would be a extra and quotes can be obtained online.

Ensure all paper work complies with ADR and VSB requirements and get everything in WRITING and do not believe what is said VERBALLY!

PS The Southern Roadcraft Cobra Chassis seems to be very robust and is similiar to one manufacturer in Victoria

I hope the fibreglassing is in the same category of my RMC Series 3 which is up to 8mm thick in places.

You can stand on certain parts of the body without fear of collapsing the bodywork on the RMC.

I think you are right, Brian W's is a Southern Roadcraft.

Brians is a Southern Roadcraft and I caught up with him in Geelong

at the All Ford Day ( No Gav you were not invited...

).

His car STILL has a blown clutch....

Hi Mike

The car is currently unregistered which really concerns me. If the Queensland process is anything like we have here in NSW, that motor has to go for starters and a compliant one installed. Then there is the chassis torsion / beaming tests as well as the side intrusion requirements, revised steering and seating A.D.R's etc., etc.

The price is good and the chap who is contemplating the buy sounds like he has been working on motoring projects previously, but I feel that he would still be better off buying something which is currently registered in Queensland. It would definitely save him a lot of grey hair and sleepless nights.

And I'd be happy to be part of a fix it gang if it can be timed right!

Anyway back on topic Garry did say he has retired from building race cars, so I suspect getting a road car up to spec will be a modestly simple exercise given the contacts he most likely has.

Less hassles and alot safer than a cobra which has to be engineered etc.

It is a 1987 Red Corvette (LHD) and is ready to rock and roll.

Drive it on club rego or wait for the 30 year rule to kick in.

When it was first listed I think it had a buy it now price of $8K. I was very tempted to press the button. Good outcome for the seller.

Currently there is Ac Cobra Kit advertised in JustCars.com.au for $8k and it is located in Geelong Victoria.

Chassis is Toyota Crown(YUCK) and it seems to be a roller in white gelcoat with a windscreen which is worth upto $1500

You can get Ac cobra alerts from Trovit cars.

I think Aswan would be disappointed with the price as I suggested that he should have kept his project as he spent alot time and effort in getting his project to the state where it is now...

His Loss your Gain as he politely puts it.

I don't think the crown chassis would pass a beaming & torsion test nowadays. I could be wrong but my engineer way back in 2000 said no-way.
