This standard 6 litre is just the 'getting to know the car' engine. I have a Comp Cams 224/230 cam to go in it. Everything else is standard (DOD / AFM removed) When I get used to it I will 'do a Gav' and put in a 416 'ish' cube engine. That should have similar horsepower to the intended V8 Supercar engine, but with a mountain more torque.

Anything to stop you from putting a responsive little hair dryer on the car and having all the power and torque you could wish for (still with your stocko motor)?

It's coming along nicely Ash.

I have thought about turbo & supercharging but would prefer to keep it simple & just utilize bigger cubes.
Don't have to worry about intercoolers etc & can possibly run in 2A sports cars if I add another seat. It has a 6 litre engine, which is the same as the VZ came out with. Still investigating what class I can run in. I know I can run as an invited spots sedan.

Ok bit of an update, nothing too exciting...
I had to buy an 'air lance' to get the air jacks to work. $517...... That's just the thing you see them push into the side of the car to jack it up..... And $340 for a Nitrogen regulator...... I 'hope' that is the last of the 'special' items...

I decided to fit a removable steering wheel, it makes it a whole lot easier getting in and out of the car.

I have also been plumbing the dry sump stuff.... Half the battle was deciding where to run all the lines.

I apologise for the quality of these photos. I took them from the bottom of the 'pit' and you can't really see everything, but it does give a good overall view.



There is a remote oil filter in there but no oil cooler as yet. Apparently it's not as important as the water temp because there is a big aluminium tank that holds about 10 litres in the boot..... I will see how it goes and fit a cooler if necessary.

I have had the ENZED guy out to have a look. He is going to make up some lines for the air lance etc and plumb in the power steering, clutch line and gearbox cooler. He had to order in some parts so hasn't started yet.

I have booked in with Peter Beehag to get the pipes done in late October so after that I will pull the engine out and get the wiring done and put the Cam / DOD delete stuff in it then.

Mate, with those "special Items" being applied to the build...what items are you having to buy to offset and contra the deal to enable you to stay married???????

As far as the build goes is that the normal position for the steering rack....or is that a V8 supercar thing for maximising steering/suspension adjustment geometry?

As for the money thing, let's just say I have sold nearly $6k worth of stuff off the wreck.... Mostly for cash....

I am pretty lucky I the fact that my wife earns a lot more than me.... Things might change when we have kids.....

As for the steering.... Not sure, it's the only one I have owned so I don't have another to compare it to. Most of that stuff is controlled so I am guessing it is a standard component.

I have been googling 'Harrop 2300' and found they can produce quite a bit of power / torque...... for not a lot of money....... and it would just be a bolt on........ hhmmmmmmm

Technically...... with CAMS......... I have no Class (insert Wazza joke here)

Can't run in V8 supercar (not original engine and box)

Can (with an exemption) run in Sports Sedans (Larry Bar is the issue apparently) as long as the engine is under 6 litres. (Although another exemption could sort that out)

Could possibly (with changes to the car) run in 2A sports cars.... because it is a production based car with a production based engine.... VZ Commodores did run the 6 litre V8.

With a blower on it I would need multiple exemptions.... lol

If i run with AASA I just turn up, they check the car is safe and I go racing. EASY!!!

There is plenty of AASA sports and sedans races up here, about 9 a year i think.

I have spoken to the guys that run the CAMS sports sedans series up here and they said I would be welcome anytime. As long as i don't win anything.... ha ha just jokes.

All in all I should be able to find somewhere to have some fun. At the end of the day that's what it is all about! We do it for the enjoyment of the sport. If it was about making money no privateer would ever enter a race.

I'm happy to expand on that and say if it was about making money you'd not go near anything that has the word RACE before it...

Race car, Race track, Race parts, Race trailer, Race license, Race u off in the trailer, Race home! It's all bad and at best wallet lightening...at worst divorce... Although some may think that's actually a better option!

Got the air jacks all operational, pretty cool stuff.
The car is heading to Peter Beehags tomorrow for a set of stepped 4 into 1 headers and some double up jack stands to get the car right up off the ground.
Will post some photos of Peters work when I get the car back.

Hopefully should get the car back this weekend, then will have to pull out the engine and box etc to rebuild it.

I have found a few photos of the car in earlier years. It was built as a VT Commodore in 1999 by Derek Van Zelm of Motorsport Engineering Serivces in Melbourne. He raced the car in 2000 in the Shell series and in later years in the Konica series.



And some of it on track at Bathurst in 2003.

Got the car back on Sunday after the Cobra breakfast. Had to pick up the trailer from Craig's workshop after the breakfast and it seems he always has Cobra people there. Even people from interstate....... And royalty too there was a large mix of people there, Kings, Queens, Presidents.... really stepping up now.

Anyways where was I ......... oh yeah. Picked up the car from Peter Beehagss shop. Job looks good, 4 into 1 stepped headers. Inch and three quarter into inch and seven eighths into 2 inch into a merge collector then back out to 90mm (each side). Should breath pretty well.

The car as I unloaded it this morning.
