Tch, tch, Ash - Now why would a "1967 Ford Mongrel 289 AC Cobra" want to play with ordinary replicas that have cheater motors state of the art braking , handling options and slicks ? :D

Ooops, Ouch! bite tongue

Hahaha I wish it was that simple sambo. But thanks for your suggestion. The A arms are custom and adjustable but the engineer refused to tack weld and test, which meant he guessed about 6 times and each time full finish welded both sides and plated. In the end he got the shape close enough but had 20 mm offset more than we requested leaving us a minimum caster of 12 degrees. A costly disaster.
Thank you all very much for your suggestions.
Mrs Flatchat or anyone else, it would be great if you could send me Marks contact details or ask him to call me on 0408429816 I'd appreciate it.
Btw it wasn't The car owner (assuming it was Marks car refferred to) who said his was the fastest Cobra but his suspension guy.

Rotax98, you may like to consider a pair of these.
Front Upper Control Arm - Factory Five Parts Catalog

I dont know if they will fit your custom chassis though.

A Few RMC folks have used them instead of the Jag Upper Arms.

I'll pass your contact details to Mark.

Rebel1 07-09-2013 06:29 AM

oops, just looked in your gallery.
Those Factory Five units I doubt will do the job.

Aussie Mike 07-09-2013 04:32 PM

Hi Rotax98

Is that a HQ Holden front end on your chassis? If so you might want to talk to McDonald bros racing in thomastown VIC. They make tubular arms for that front end.

Lindsay gets on here sometimes and has built a Cobra for him self and worked on a few others.

Regards

Rotax if you have no luck and do facebook you may be able to get in touch with him there.

If you go to https://www.facebook.com/QLDCobraClub and then look at comments adjacent to the 2 days of thunder pics...

Anyone know what transmission is used in that Cobra video ?

spookypt 07-09-2013 08:17 PM

Hollinger at a guess.

Aussie Mike 07-09-2013 09:30 PM

Certainly sounds like a Holinger. They have a distinctive whine with the straight cut gears.

Cheers

spookypt 07-09-2013 09:47 PM

A long shot could be a Jerico with a Renagate Sequential shifter RENAGATE

Straight cut gears but the throw on the renegate so long compared to Hollinger boxes its unlikely. My thing wines like there's no oil in it!

A jerico on what seems like a hill climb/gymkhana car could be handful...

I'd really love to see Mark and his car out with the QLD Racer guys..... new crew are always welcome.....and it'd be nice to see how it goes roundy roundy for 8 laps...

Perhaps considering all the youtube footage its not been built for that kind of fun and its moreso a weapon for what you see on youtube. It sure sounds stout!

Thanks guys. Ours is a Crown front cross member (for now, for rego purposes-one day) customised to suit the coil over Penske shocks and Rays wheels. We originally modified the Crown upper arms which technically worked except that we had nil camber and it floated down the straight like a bowl of porridge.

We might look at making a jig for the current custom A Arms the modify then with 40mm offset vs the current 60mm offset and all should be good. The reason why I liked Marks suspension guys electric steering unit as it has an on dash control to adjust the steering weight which would make life easier given we have a manual rack. It also is a steering quickener if I recall which would again be beneficial.

Rebel1 07-09-2013 10:58 PM

Rotax, I can confirm the electronic steering in Marks car came from the company I linked to earlier in the thread.

He's using the 6 speed sequential Holinger: Holinger H6S

I don't believe the car yet has a strain gauge fitted, so while it's a clutchless upshift Grant is still lifting off for each gearchange.

I ran into Mark at a car show months ago. The car wasn't there for me to look at, but he said fitting the Holinger required significant work to the RMC chassis. They're an odd shaped trans, but what an incredible bit of gear!

spookypt 07-10-2013 02:14 AM

Craig, any ideas of rough cost?

I'd love one. But 20k is a g50 and 427 for the 40.

Rebel1 07-10-2013 02:18 AM

He is a short you tube from Sunday last:
Mongrel Cobra at Lakeside - YouTube

That fella in the passenger seat sure slowed it up :)

750hp 07-10-2013 03:40 AM

Les, have you driven in a car with an M22 Muncie trans? The old M22 Rock-Crusher was known for their gear whine, so I'm keen to hear your thoughts on how much louder the Holinger is when you're just driving normally.

BITTEN 07-10-2013 07:15 PM

Thanks everyone for your help. Mark emailed me the details and it was Ultimate Power Steering. The smallest unit is the used on this years British Touring Cars and costs $12,000 however they range from $1300 up. $12,000 allows you to preset via laptop how much steering weight you want for each part of the track when it is used with Motec track mapping.
I have also added a few new pics of our "BITTEN" Cobra for anyone interested.
We've just had the engine out to advance the cam a few degrees and tweak a few house keeping bits like stopping our feet for spontaneously combusting with a bit of carbon fibre on the footwells and heat insulation matting.
Next job is to add a relay to the starter. Those of you who were at the nationals may remember we had an oil leak issue (now rectified) which leaked onto the clutch and we couldn't get it started on the Sunday. Turns out we were just tooth to tooth on the starter/flywheel cogs. Even with experts all around us, none of us thought to rock the car in gear which would have solved it. Its funny how sometimes you look for the complicated answers to simple problems.

Sorry mate, for some reason I thought you had a Harrison - obviously Harrison top arms are not a viable solution.

An electric rack seems like a complicated way to deal with excessive castor. Can't the engineer correct his mistake and remove 20mm from the offset?

Sorry Matt, I didn't see your question. You're pretty much on the money. Good used H6S gearboxes are normally $10K to $13K, shifter is about $1500, then bellhousing, starter, clutch, etc etc etc...

New, I think the H6S is about $21K, but at least you get to choose your ratios.

spookypt 07-10-2013 09:39 PM

All good. Big coin!

There's an unanswered question in my last pm to you as well!
