QLD Fastest Black Cobra

I'd love some help everyone. A year ago I spoke to a suspension guy in QLD who stated that he had done the suspension on QLDs fastest cobra (apparently it is black). He had put an electric attachment onto the steering column which was adjustable from the dash.
Unfortunately I lost the suspension guys details and with a minimum of 12 deg caster on our Cobra I either need to go to the gym or use the same elec assist device (Our A arms were custom made with too much offset).Apparently the device was also a steering quickener which is an additional benefit.
So, I need to track down the Cobra owner in order to get the suspension guys details.
My email address is jknott@au.westfield.com

quick cobra

Hmm, that's a conundrum?

The fastest "track" black cobra I know currently is Geoff Tauntan's BDM. He can be contacted through BYDesign Motorsport but I don't know whether he's the guy you're chasing. Gary Halls BDM is only a flys *(&^*( off his pace.

There's a another fella called called Mark Crespan who I think owns what was a FLURO green and now black cobra called the MONGREL Cobra. he doesn't swim on the Club Circles but moreso the historic/sprint circles.. He's often at Leyburn and Pittsworth sprints etc. Mrs Flatchat on here would certainly have his contact info and know some more about the car.

See below
Oakey Street Sprints Grant Watson driving the Mongrel Cobra - YouTube

I've never seen Marks car tracked so don't know what constitutes fastest.

The quick BLACK Cobras I know of are...

Wayne Proctor's Harrison
Gary Halls BDM
Geoff Tauntans BDM
Scotty Hampsons Custom build of bits
And John White's old Turbo Car which is now are beautiful street car.
Wazza Red car with mud on it (looks black) is pretty quick too.

Regarding what you are trying to achieve it sounds more practical to modify that castor angle than try and compensate for it but that's only my opinion.

Good luck in your search.

I'm with Spook. Maybe just order a standard set of top arms from Harrison and get another wheel alignment. Or is it not that simple?

Spook, you're spot on about Mark. He has an adjustable power steering setup on his car, which I saw in action when he turned up to a club breakfast a few months ago.
It's a genuinely fast car with a stout high-rpm small block and sequential Holinger trans, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mark has shouted from the rooftops that it is the fastest Cobra in the universe. He is not a shy man.

For the life of me, I can't recall the name of the steering assembly, but I recall it was used by most sprint car drivers. Might be worth looking at Boettcher Race Parts to see what they offer.

That video above sounds awesome. V8 supercar stuff right there.... that would be fun and a handful to drive.

Try this company:
Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS)

spookypt 06-26-2013 10:39 PM

Ups

Ultimate Power Steering are great guys. Warwick straightened and crack tested my PS rack in my car and shortened and valved my front shocks too. He's at Brendale on Brisbane's Northside.

Yep, All the great guys are at Brissy North side :p

Good tip Les. Those units look great. Not cheap, but with the added collapsible section they could be a "two birds with one stone" solution for people part way through a build.

Craig, I know this car very very well.
As you say Mark is not a shy man but I have to give him credit for what he has done with that old RMC. ( I know, I'm a bit biased)

He is out at Lakeside today and the car is just a beast. Not only goes very hard but handles and stops as it should.

There is nothing at lakeside today which gets anywhere near him at full song.

The car has full harnesses and even when pulled down as tight as you can get them they still flap around in the breeze at full song.

I wish I was out there today Les; looks like perfect weather for it.

No doubt about it - Mark's car is a weapon and he's incorporated heaps of trick gear into it. He has built most of it himself too, so it's a real credit to him. Grant Watson drove it recently and had some great things to say about the car. I would love to see Mark take it out to QR or Morgan Park so it can stretch its legs.

So when can we expect yours to be completed? I'm looking forward to another RMC hitting the road!

I understand Mark is considering going out to Warwick shortly but he doesn't enjoy the club scene so who knows what will happen. :o)

Actually, the block in Marks cobra is the very same you provided a link to a while back when I requested leads for "affordable" alloy blocks. I think that was before the server crash.

Mine is essentially finished but not yet registered.

Just cleaning up some minor issues.

Les, what could mark possibly not like about the club scene?

With mark and geoff t now running sequential boxes I wonder if this the way things are going with weekend racing?

I did some rough googling and they seem pretty exy?

I'm not the right fella to answer this Matt. Seems a Northside thing, enough over here to start their own club.

Mark has a heap of mates from V8 Supercars circles so knows when bits are being pensioned off. Helps a heap.

1967 AC Cobra, Cobra 1967, AC Cobra 1967, Ford AC Cobra, 1967 Ford Cobra, 1967 Ford Mongrel. ??

What lap times is he doing Les ?

sideshow 07-07-2013 06:11 AM

just get an electric power steering system from a Suzuki ignis
easy to set up
power earth and 2 wires for motor
then there is a speed sensor wire
hook up a pulse generator to this speed sensor wire and u can adjust how much assistance u get

750hp 07-07-2013 06:16 AM

It was a car show today Chris, so it was just 1/8th mile and slalom stuff rather than the full circuit.

750hp 07-07-2013 06:20 AM

I see the new VF Holden has gone away from hydraulics and has an electric power steering system.

sideshow 07-07-2013 06:25 AM

I have wired up afew astra electric pumps lately and even a bmw mini elect pump into a new Subaru imprezza so many cars run them these days

He was booked in to do the B series sprints this year at Warwick. Hasn't turned up to an event yet so we don't know how fast he is. He tends to do events that the rest of the Cobra fraternity don't attend......

Generally the B series sprints have a slower field..... so he will look fantastic against them.

How do you call yourself Queenslands fastest Cobra when you don't race against other Cobras??
