Hi, I am new to the forum & have a couple of questions if anybody has the answers.
I am looking at a Cobra that is in America has anybody imported a car to Australia? The car is over 25 years old.I was wondering if it is very difficult or extremely costly to do this. It would have to be registered in NSW. Thanks

I have imported before. The import is relatively easy, it is the approval which will cause you grief!

You will need to get approval from the Federal Government before you can import it into Australia, and they are strict!

Don't buy anything until you have approval, or you will own a car in a foreign country that will never see the light of day on Australian roads!!

There's companies that can handle the whole approval process for you talk to them and find out what's involved. Then once it gets here you need to sort out compliance.

^ Ain't that the truth...

You may want to PM Craig - username "750hp".
He's been there and done that, and is a wealth of information on the topic.
I've no doubt he'll probably post with some words of wisdom in this thread soon enough.

Best of luck with it all.

Ps. Almost forgot - Welcome to the forum

Hi Lee. Dimis has set some pretty high expectations of me

I'm one of a few guys who took the plunge and tried to import an old Cobra. Some succeeded and some have been knocked back.
It's best to start by reading this thread Pre 1989 Import and also the extra thread that's mentioned within it. That will give you an idea of some of the main things to be aware of.

If you still have any questions or wonder if the documentation you have on the car might be sufficient, send me a private message.

I'm not sure how much you've searched around locally, but there are some great cars on the market (or soon to be) here in Oz, plus some excellent kits available for brand new builds.

No worries, but I did have Craig (400TT)'s Absolute Pace cars in mind as a new build option

Some cobra memgbers has undertaken the process of importing Ac Cobra from the states and they should supply you a wealth of imformation.
Some companies like Kiwi Shipping in the California will try and put you off the import process.
Be wary that heavily modified vehicles will not get a Import Approval from our fathers in Canberra!
As far as I can see the golden rule is that the car must be more than 30 years old and you must show/prove that the Cobra was registered.
A Department of Motor Vehicles, for example, in California will provide you a certificate for a fee which will provide a history of the car's registration etc.
