Default aftermarket ecu

hey guys, recently we have finished out cobra! and thank god for that,
we have put on a mass-flo efi intake system, and cant get the car running right, its been a while and would have though the ecu (a9l) would have tuned its self by now over 1000kms of driving
we have spoken to a few people with aftermarket ecu's in there cobras and are leaning down that path to.
what i am wondering is,
what have people put into there cars?
what are some decent brands? but dont want to break the bank
how much would i be looking at spending?
car has a au wiring loom inside running a mustang a9l ecu manual 5 speed!

Congratulations on finishing your car. Looks great!

Apart from the Massflo, have you made any other modifications to the engine? Heads, cam, injectors etc?

There are a number of Massflo systems floating around and many running on the A9L.

A thread about the build would be very interesting and enjoyed by many. Start one in the same place as this one and you will have plenty of feedback!

Are they 16" rims? What size tyres are you running?

Velj, congratulations on a great looking car.

Couldn't help but notice the front bar is mounted upside down. See if it will bolt on the other way - the flat section goes to the bottom.

Can'thelp with the ECU though.

what is your budget
by time u buy an ecu and get it wired and tuned you will be up for over 3 or 4 g

autronic and motec is very good
vipec/ link are very good and slightly cheaper
haltech is good these days
speak to your tuner and ask what he likes to tune

The Mas-Flo system uses most stock Ford parts. There are a lot of advantages to that. The disadvantage is that the stock A9l computer can only go so far. Most Mustang guys know that if you do anything more than simple bolts on's, the stock ECU needs to be tuned. And, it does very little self tuning. Only within the parameters of the Stock Mustang.

If you've installed anything more than the bone stock Mustang 5.0, you need a tube.

There are a couple of tuners for the A9l, and they all have their followers. Find a local tuner who is familiar with what you have, and then buy whatever tuning system he recommends.

If you do have a b one stock 5.0, and the stock ECU won;t run correctly, there's a problem in the system. It should run well without spending much money on it. Any codes? check for vacuum leaks, loose wires, bad grounds on sensors. etc.

Maybe you can take it to a local Ford dealer, and have them hook up their computer for a diagnostic check.

There's probably no reason for you to spend $3,000 on a new ECU, when you probably have a perfectly good one already installed.

hi thanks guys, currently its basicly stock but has a mild cam, but nothing major, but we are currently looking at buying another 302 block and stroking it to a 347 and building a complete new engine and do a swap over, as this has very little power, my daily v6 is quicker lmfao, only problem with tuning the a9l is that where i am itsvery hard to find someone that will actualy tune it, iv called at least 10 places and they wont do it!

if u can fit a dizzy to it with a vt style pickup then u can wire up an gm ls1 ecu to it
and make heaps more power than u can imagine hehehe
plus there are heaps of ls1 tuners out there

It's not to hard
Did an ls1 ecu to a ford eb v8 one day
Whole setup was in a ford anglia/prefect

And these days u can get inline gm idle motor alloy blocks so u can also have idle control

You should look at this ECU. It is basically the same ECU as Ford puts on new cars today, only with software designed to be user friendly to the hot rod crowd. So it does not care if you are running without all the EPA stuff that Ford is required to do.

I've got a Mass-Flo unit on my big block and it runs fine but the learning curve on the A9L is brutally steep if you're not experienced with it. Tuning for max power is pretty straight forward but when you get into the driveability realm it gets really complicated. Finding someone who understands the A9L program can be a challenge. A lot of people will tell you they can tune it but beyond the max power tuners the pool of tuners gets pretty shallow.
You might get a hold of Mass-Flo and find out if their new ProM ECU is compatible with the setup you've got and if it would be reasonable price wise to change over.

thanks alot guys, im currently looking into getting the ls1 ecu hopefully that works i no one of Melbourne LS engine specialist, they have made some of the most powerful holdens in Australia, iv spoken to them and they are more then happy to give it a tune if i can get the ls1 ecu fitted exciting times ahead

its not as straight forward as fitting a haltech or vipec or motec ecu
but they are nice and easy to tune

I would assume you will have to change every sensor on the engine to a GM type. I'm thinking GM may use a different Ohm range injector, so you may need to replace them too. You may have to go to coil on plug, as I do not know how you could make it work with the Ford distributor.

u can use the ford tps
I know u can use a 302 from an eb injector so I would imagine the au injectors would be same ohms
we have figured out how to run an ls1 ecu with a single coil

it is fiddly to do so sometimes I just tell people to buy a haltech ecu as u could probably use most your sensors
