Aussie car buyers may soon be able to import direct
The article is from ninemsn web site... so basically "tabloid" news...
But if you are to believe the journalism then Australians may soon be able to purchase a new car directly from overseas.
Caveat is any imported cars would still have to meet Australia's road safety requirements.
Car buyers may soon be importing direct from overseas
Thoughts?

I read this article this morning and the first thing that sprung to mind was "can you please explain the warranty issues again". Savings would be huge and would certainly bring about some competition with many companies having the capacity to import for you , without holding any warranty obligation. I hope it happens as it would benefit ICV builders with more uniform laws.

People are already importing cars. Does this remove a lot of the red tape?

This will never happen. The manufacturer's dealer networks are too powerful and politically connected.

My fear is that if this does become an option, which on the face of it sounds reasonable, that the beauraucrats will eventually ensure the cost of it becomes prohibitve to most all in the guise of ADRs and safety. Much the same as ICVs.
Case in point:
There is NO reason a cobra replica should cost as much as it does.
Plastic body, cheap 2nd hand driveline, simple chassis and parts. NO overheads, advertising and R&D when compared to AUDI, BMW, Toyota etc... A big part of the expense is simple compliance.
Ie. Indicator Lens too high or too low or too yellow or too etc...

The opening line of the story ...
"The federal government has included the idea in a discussion paper released today, News Corp reports".
I wouldn't be holding my breath for a speedy outcome.

Just another talkfest..............fortunes spent (our money naturally) on case studies and research before no one has the spine to make a decision. Sits on the shelf and dies a slow death.

I think there's a better chance of my hair growing back than this happening :-) . Too many vested interests. Cheers Gregg
