Concrete for sure. You can do a "stamped concrete" with an added Scoffield color and a sealer if you want a nice pattern in it.
You might want to also look at doing interlocking pavers. They look great and have a massive compression strength. They are typically placed over a solid sand or gravel bed. The other nice thing about going with pavers is you can remove an area to deal with a root or something else, then re-install them. Of course, they are most likely not the best to roller skate on!

Went out to a mates on the weekend with a road base driveway.....Didn't leave me warm and fuzzy. So I've made the call.
Concrete!! Stage 1 being both driveways = 425sqm will be done within the next week or so. Stage 2 will be next year but with stage 1 I will actually be able to drive combined with my easement about 200m before I get to the main road so can do some "testing" in my cobra! ha.
Thanks for everyones help. Once Stage 1 is done and the sheds completed its onto the house reno's... Did you know a spiral staircase costs like $10K!!! Far out this simpler country/coastal life is gonna get expensive!

425m2 is a ****eload of concrete.....
Ive just completed a new driveway 2.5 x 150m long up a mother of a hill.
The best part is the concrete was FREE, courtesy of nsw taxpayers contributing to the Byron
bypass :-)......worst part was i screeded every bloody metre by myself, now i cant stand up:-(
It did take a few months tho

I've been watching this thread with interest as we've just bought a property with a long driveway that looks to be compacted road base and "blue metal" gravel. We don't get the keys for a few weeks and I haven't seen it after heavy rain but it's very hard under foot. A friend said they may have mixed powdered cement in with the road base.
The driveway continues around behind the house for about the same distance again, roughly 200m long in total. Will be interesting to see how it fares over time.

Sambo that's a very very pretty picture. I only wish mine was like that when I bought it never mind the mess I've made since my shed "project" started.
This is what it looks like and the subsequent dust bowl a little further down the drive since the pad got cut.
The dirt is just like bull dust. Super fine and blows everywhere. What's amazing is despite its dryness under the mountain behind us and running underneath our house is a natural spring and every nite we get huge RED Claw coming up through the dirt. Not a drop of water in sight but bloody big Crayfish everywhere! |

Good stuff! If you want the gravel drive look, another close answer is what we call DG, or decomposed granite here in the States. Drains well and eventually packs down well. No dust with it usually either. I have done and seen big Bev Hills mansions that like the stuff for the old nostalgic look.

I used to work in the highways dept here in sa yrs ago and we used a product called ctcr it stood for cement treated crushed rock once layed and watered and rolled it went rock hard with very little dust coming of it .
it looks very similar to your driveway there sambo ..

It may well be something like that Deano. As for the lawns, my ride on mower has a stubby holder.

Hasn't your Missus got 4 legged lawn mowers for the property?
I love my ride-on mower. It has a stubby holder too. I find mowing now to be quite Zen and not a chore at all. An opportunity to switch off and unwind.
