I am really sorry I won't be able to attend this year.
Shelbyfest is a fantastic event that is both great fun on the track and has a very family oriented atmosphere.
Hopefully we will be back on track for next years event.

My rear tyres (Contis) are nearly 5 years old and I'm contemplating the Kumhos for Winton.

What are those KU36 tyres like on the street, particularly in the wet? I've read they're better than "proper" semi-slicks in greasy conditions.

Would they be OK as a street tyre long-term?

spookypt 03-15-2015 05:44 PM

Sambo, I'm pretty sure Wazza runs these and he drives his cobra on the road more than some people I know drive their "normal" cars. Drop him a PM if he doesn't chime in...

Sambo there are plenty of people running them on the street, nothing bad that I have heard.

But, depending on your desired size good luck finding sizes for the rear.

The KU36 is about to be discontinued and replaced with the V720, you will find that 285/40/17 & 295/35/17 are out of stock at Kumho (AU and US) and on global manufacturing back-order. You might find 315/35/17. If you look at Summit they will show stock, or a ship-date within a week - but place an order and it will show back-order.

Front sizes appear to be plentiful.

The V720 was due out last year, was delayed and is currently expected anytime now.

....umm, what exactly is Shelbyfest? Assuming it's Cobras and replicas, and anything else Shelby related. Heard about it in the last couple of years, but don't know anything about it. Is it only cars on the track, or is there more to it? I found a Facebook page with one post. Where can I find more information?
Cheers,
Glen

Thanks Ben. My rears are 275/40 R17 and I've found a local source at around $300.

The V720 apparently has a treadwear rating of 100 versus KU36 with 180. I can't justify dedicated track wheels/tyres with only 1-2 events per year so the KU36 is probably better value for me.

Ah yes, the 275's are around in some stock - be careful on manufacture date.

285 and 295 are long gone.

Cobra Car Club of Victoria

Hello Glen,

AFAIK there are two [primarily] 'Cobra' track events in Australia.

The warm up is the 'Nationals', held Wakefield (near Goulburn) - which makes a great curtain raiser for 'ShelbyFest' at Winton (near Wangaratta). :D

There is an open practice day on the Friday (not exclusive to the event), welcome do on the Friday evening at the hotel, a track day with a few events on the Saturday, presentation evening Sat. night then motokhana (or similar) on the Sunday morning followed by a lunch - more awards (inc. overall event placings) and then the digestion during the drive home Sunday arvo.

If you are interested you can download the entry form and register for the social events only - you'll be very welcome

and you can bring some updates on your 289 - hope to meet you Glen (been a while since we talked)

Thanks Michael.
I have family in Canberra, so sometime...
My 289? You have a good memory. I hope to start a build thread soon ;)
Cheers,
Glen

Thanks for that info Ben - I had no idea they were discontinued. I think the Control Tyre class may have to be refined to include a range of comparable tyres with a similar UTQG rating.

The KU36 do age OK though - last year was my 3rd Nats with the same tyres and they seemed as good as they were at the 1st. They will be about 5 years old this year and should last at least one more nats. They are a bit tricky in the wet. I have a set of KU39's they were a bit better in the wet, but 3-4 secs slower around wakefield.

No Shelbyfest for me this year, but am determined to get my hardtop fitted so I can drive down in 2016.

Cheers

To all those who are thinking about attending, please do. Its a ripper event ,very well run and friendly. Always plenty to look at and get the mind thinking and inevitably the wallet tends to open up for the next year !!.
My car will not be ready for this year unfortunately due to a new heart transplant/upgrade. But I do plan on attending Winton on Saturday to say hello and check things out.
All the best to those competing and may it be safe and mechanically good to all !

Cheers

I would love to have a pair of ku36 285 40 17 tyres can't find them anywhere in Australia and overseas.

guye 03-23-2015 02:06 PM

Another thread seems to have broken. :-(

Can't see 1_TUF_AC last post!

guye 03-23-2015 02:08 PM

Ahh - now I can!

Modena 03-23-2015 02:59 PM

I just bought 275/40x17 KU36 from TyreTrader, delivered yesterday. 285 and 295 in 17" are out of stock worldwide.

The replacement V720 is due out in US summer, it will be some time more before they land here.

It is worthwhile the NSW club starting to think about the control tyre class now, to give people some time to adjust if necessary. Perhaps adding a choice of 2 or 3 different tyres to the class?

sambo 03-25-2015 06:07 PM

Hotel room booked for two nights, will transfer money tomorrow Stiffy. Can't wait!

Had a proper wheel alignment yesterday by Rob at Tuckett's Tyrepower in Hastings. It turns out I've been driving around with 0.5 to 1 degree of caster which explains my nerves on the front straight at Winton last year (power steering too).

For years I've been thinking "that's just how Cobras drive". %/**)
