Different angle on scratch build

There's some good ideas floating in this thread, how about an idea from left field?

How about using your already sorted and registered Cobra chassis and re-body it into an iconic 1950's era sports car? I like the look of the 50's Maserati's and specifically the 1957 300S and/or 450S.

The 450S had a V8 in it and how about those sexy lines and curves.

I don't know about the laws/regulations in Australia but I think here in the USA/CA I can rebody my already registered Cobra without needing to re-inspect or re-register it. I'm guessing the dyed in the wool Cobra person might think of this as heresy but it's just a replica to start with anyway.

I've been thinking about doing this because my Cobra is over 20 years old, the paint is starting to show it's age, and mine is just 1 of many Cobra replicas running around. It's only got 34K miles on it, runs, and handles like a dream. If re-bodied to a Maserati 450S, now I've got the only one that most people would ever see in their lifetime. Now wouldn't that be fun :D

Of course, I'd need to finish my Ferrari GTO project first so I'd have something "fun" to drive while the new body was under construction ;)

I have often thought about a 450S as a scratch build
I see it as a bit of an antecedent to the Cobra - particularly given one of the former notable drivers...

Exactly!!! It's not that I have anything against the comp 289 Cobras (or any Cobra model) because they're absolutely gorgeous. But sometimes when you paint outside the lines, an equally gorgeous work of art emerges.

@Peter: thanks for the link to the other scratch/kit car forum. I wasn't aware of it and I can see a bunch of like minded people there. That 250 TR is beautiful.

What a great looking car!

What about a Locost? Get the book, easy to build and you can join the Ozclubies crowd??

Krait 05-18-2015 08:16 AM

Another option.

Squeezing a V12 in might be a challenge, MEV replicar

Not quite a locost, yet not quite a Jag.

Dimis 05-18-2015 04:16 PM

:)

I could count the 289's on the fingers of no hands at every cobra nats I've been to. Lots of great cars suggested but no more rare than a 289 in Australia at least.

Are you challenging me? ;)

By jove I do believe you have taken up that challenge! Good stuff and thanks Spook for pointing us to that thread - I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.

Any thoughts?

Here are some other interesting thoughts (with pictures ;)) on the same subject. Started by Jim Holden several years ago....

(It IS Cobra based, using an ERA427 frame)
