Exactly my point... That's the easy 5%.

If it's the challenge you like then, just put it in perspective, its a couple of hundred dollars in steel, you don't need the global budget of Fords R&D department to make chassis, especially as there are plans available.
Most of the kits available weren't designed on cad, mainly grass roots racing experience, but all learnable, with research and determination, the original AC chassis doesn't pass the Ackermann angle definition.

Andrew, if I was going to do this I would *ahem* base my chassis on the round tube CR. People who have been to Shelby HQ and seen a current-day chassis in fabrication know why. Clearly Ian spent some time there!

Buy a kirkham body and alter the chassis design as required to fit it.

But, I wouldnt do this because why? It's not really scratch build if you're basing it on some other chassis and buying a body. If you just want to build another Cobra that is not a pace, get a new CR. If you cant get a CR for some reason, I have a tape measure as per first paragraph. :)

I reckon if you want to do a scratch build, make your first car a race only one, so the chassis improvements can be done neatly on chassis 2, and finalised in chassis 3...

Easy!

There's a few of us clubbie blokes who have built more than 1 or 2, and have some handy tips on how to do it. I'd recommend heading to ozclubbies as a forum, and asking there.

I agree with you Ben, the current cr chassis is probably the most authentic in oz. I think Ian did an excellent job...does anyone know what their current status is?

The prospect of starting from scratch really appeals to me. Wish list is pretty close to what mike said....289 fia body, original style chassis, deep dish, 302 and webers etc. something that could win most authentic.....oh hang on.....Already got one of them...:p

The original cobra would never have happened without a give it a go attitude....

albanycobra 05-05-2015 06:19 AM

Maybe get the 289 chassis plans and see how it looks, actually I think there is a website that sells them. Would be a great build thread and lots of interest I reckon. There is lots of experience on this forum that can help you tackle all build issues.

I say go for it.....

The 289 transverse leaf front end is unique, so it would be cool to keep that feature. Kris K built this chassis:

Hmmmm...now you have me thinking about club reg and webers. Damn you

For what it's worth, Factory Five now offer a 289 FIA kit, and their chassis is close to original ....

Are there any 289 roadster or FIA replicas on the road in Australia?
Cheers,
Glen

I was speaking with Ian's son the other day and yes they are still in business, though I think the business is still up for sale.

maxakarudy 05-06-2015 01:18 AM

It's difficult to scratch build any authentic Cobra at the moment until the original running gear parts become available, as I've found out

It was imported around 2000 by my uncle who made/owned it in the UK.
Sat in Aus for 14 years dormant until I brought it 5 months ago with 3,900 miles on the clock, was used for speed trials and hill climbs during the early-mid 80's.
Was in latest edition of '289 register' UK magazine being BRA 289 body No.4

Basically classic UK set up:
MG 1966 chassis, MG suspension & brakes, diff 3.7:1
Rover 3.5 V8 SD1, group 1 spec engine balanced & blueprinted
Crane Cam, modded heads, Holley 4 barrel, offenhauser manifold.
Wire wheels 15x7 3 ear knock offs, cooper cobra GT radials.
Rover 5 speed, smiths gauges, kerb weight 820kg.

Been flat out over the last 5 months getting her going and ready for the road.
And it's paid off ! Such a buzz to drive !
I have also recently joined CCCV and am very excited as the whole cobra community seems to be a very passionate one...
Cheers
Aaron

Welcome Aaron! Your car is quite unique here in Australia.
Please post many pictures :)
Cheers,
Glen

Sounds very interesting Aaron. I'm keen to see pics too.

I think the original Python chassis used MG front suspension components.

I like the Rover V8 and have fond memories of a friends Mazda 323 wagon back in New Zealand. It was an ex NZ Post office van complete with faded post office red paint. He stuffed a rover 3.5 into it but it looked stock on the outside. A real street sleeper until he uncorked the exhaust and stepped on the gas.

Cheers

I too would like to see some photos Aaron.

Heres a few pics of the sort of car I would like to recreate - Think Ive only seen one of a similar style at a NSW cobra club event - was on their web page page - red one, not sure who owned it.

Not sure Id want the leaf springs though, so would do a 427 style chassis with the 289 body.

Andrew, that yellow sashed car is exactly what I was wanting to get/buy late last year. While I don't have the skills/time/energy/know how to do a scratch build I love that look. No: 98 looks outstanding too. I'm not sure if its just because we don't see many in the fold or if people are looking to just do something different to what's been done a lot before.
Even my wife Chris green lighted the idea. She loves them but the idea lost momentum and we changed our plans, Thus the Bendell Daytona. I'd still love to get one in my garage (although room now is at a premium) but it'd be awesome watching you create this out of an idea and put your stamp on it.

Matt
