Yeah I feel your pain when it comes to mixing and matching, been there before and learnt the hard way. That's why I went the full motor / gearbox combo from a stock Falcon.

Could try the rod shop in Castlemaine. I have one of there set ups from the efi 5.0 to a 6 cylinder t5.
The early XR -XT ran the 157 tooth flywheel with the top loader. I changed my XY to this with a yellow terror flywheel and mcleods solid plate 10.5 clutch. Works great.

It's been suggested that products from Clutch Industries in Thomastown, Victoria, and Australian Clutch Services in Adelaide are good.

Clutch Industries' brands are CI and also RPM
They do clutches only (I think)

Australian Clutch Services brand is Xtreme
They do both clutches and flywheels

Does anybody have any experiences or comments about any of these?

I'll purchase the flywheel and clutch and fit these to the engine before looking at HTOBs. I then need to know what space I have available between the pressure plate and the mtg. face on the Toploader before I look seriously at HTOBs

Not sure of your application but I went down the road of a McLeod mild performance clutch behind my 5L mating to a TKO600.

I have since swapped it out back to the standard AU clutch system using a matching standard clutch plate.

Did this to reduce the clamping pressure and hence clutch pedal pressure, as I've got an issue with my hydraulic ratio at present.

Once I am on the road and can practically see and experience clutch take up I am likely to modify my master or slave further to improve (reduce) the clutch pedal pressure if I can.

Remember the cars are very light so unless you need clamp pressure behind a behemoth engine for drop clutch drags, you can go relatively light.

Thanks slowy, that's the sort of feedback I need. I'm thinking that standard clamping pressure will be more than adequate.

i tend to agree i think you said the other night you were going to use a mild 5 litre and a top loader ? in case i would stick with a factory style clutch and flywheel if it's mainly going to be a sunday driver . with the odd track day .

Yep, 220kW 5.0 SBF with a WR Toploader and a rear end of around 3.07
I like the idea of being able to hit 60mph in first gear

The flywheel will probably be around 24 pound or 11kg, which I think is lighter than a factory FW, but should be perfect in such a light car.

I see you're from Geelong....so 65mph in 1st makes for a quicker (and cheaper) 'get out of town' than a helicopter

You can get lightweight billet steel flywheels as well. I've got a Yella Terra one in mine. The lightweight steel flywheel is about 7KG where the aluminium ones are about 6KG. Very happy with the quality of the Yella Terra item and locally made too.

Just checking. Your 5.0 shoukld have a 157 tooth 50 oz flywheel and a 3 bolt passenger side starter motor from factory with a 10.5 inc clutch and a cable oreating the clutch fork onto the thrust bearing.
It sounds like you have a bell housing out of a earlier Falcon with the 2 bolt starter on drivers side which would need the 164 tooth fly wheel which were 28 oz and a hydraulic operated clutch fork.
From I can see you may need to get a 164 tooth fly wheel made with 50 oz balance.
My Cobra is running a AU XR8 5.0 which was a auto. I had to get a flywheel, bell housing and clutch. The gearbox is a 6 cylinder T5 which is the same gearbox as a V8 but with a shorter input shaft.
All our gear came from Castelmain Rod Shop except the motor and gearbox. It is the same as stock apart from the clutch kit. Which is RPM 111N
I found this the easiest. The hole set up works fine. Only done 1 track day at Winton and no drag racing yet.

Hi Ross,
My 5.0 is a Tickford 220kW engine, and it came to me with a flexplate still attached which is why I'm asking questions about flywheels and clutches and HTOBs.
In addition, what I already have is a QuickTime RM-6063 scattershield and a WR Toploader, so it's a very late 5 litre SBF matched to a 50 year old gearbox.
The flywheel must be a 157 tooth, and of course, 50 ounce imbalance. Clutch must be a 10.5" max. Starter is a 3 bolt, not 2 bolt.

So....you have a Clutch Industries RPM R111N? That's one I have under consideration; the other is an Australian Clutch Services (local Adelaide) "Xtreme" brand KFD27001-1A
Both are 268mm dia. x 10 spline x 27.0mm (1-1/16")
Suitable flywheel is an Xtreme chrome moly steel FFD001CL

Both of these clutches are (I think) similar to the OEM unit which is more than adequate for such a light car.

Last thing under consideration is a hydraulic throw out bearing. I have to use one of these because there is not sufficient tunnel room for a protruding clutch fork.

Sounds like you're happey enough with your RPM 111N clutch?

Have you verified the crankshaft end play? From what I have read, it should be in the range of 0.004" - 0.008". Perhaps Brent or one of our other engine experts can chime in.

Don't know if these numbers are different for a motor running an automatic (what your motor came with) versus a manual (what you plan to run).

Of course I.....haven't.
Anybody know? Different for manual trans to the end play on an auto trans engine?
I'm hoping not.

Hi Glen

The Yella Terra flywheel part number is 9909 for the 157 tooth 50oz.
9909L for a light weight. These are off the shelf units.

All the Ford AU V8 motors I have used in previous cars where factory auto, all converted to manual fine. I wouldn't worry about it to much.
